Interview Question 8 (2012 Test): A Nigerian Cement company projected a 45 percent increase in sales this year over that of last year, but sales this year actually decreased by 15 percent. What percent of the projected sales were the actual sales?
A. 36.13%
B. 40.23%
C. 50.78%
D. 58.62%
E. -15.00%
SOLUTION
The correct answer is D
This is a very tricky question because no exact numbers are provided. On such percent problems 100 is almost always a good number to pick, so pick 100 as last year's sales. (100 can be Units, naira, kobo-- it doesn't matter.)
Then the 45% increase is simply 45, and the projected sales is 145. The 15% decrease is simply 15, so the actual sales was 85. 85/145=58.62%. There are no variables in the answer choices, so you don't have to do any evaluations - answer choice (D) is correct
Interview Question 7 (2012 Test): Abeokuta Breweries earnings were N12 million last year. If 2013's earnings are projected to be 150 percent greater than last year's earnings, what is Abeokuta Breweries projected earnings this year?
A. N13.5 million
B. N30 million
C. N18 million
D. N27 million
E. N15 million
SOLUTION
The correct and is B
On percentage questions, as pointed out in previous questions, it is essential that you read the question carefully and answer what is being asked. In this case, a careful assessment reveals that the question is asking. What is 12 million increased by 150%? NOT What is 150% of 12 million? A lot of candidates would answer this question incorrectly because they did not pay attention. The correct answer is 30 million (B) not 18 million (C).
Solution for Interview Question 6 (Rates):
This problem can be solved in 2 easy steps.
First you must convert the times that are given to rates:
If pumping machine A takes 5 hours to complete the job, then its rate is 1/5 of pumping.
If pumping machine B takes y hours to complete the job, then its rate is 1/y of pumping.
If pumping machine A and B together take 2 hours to complete the job, then their rate is 1/2 of the pumping.
To solve for y, use the fact that rates are additive:
Rate combined = Rate A + Rate B. With the rates that we determined, 1/2=1/5+1/y.
We now have one equation with one unknown and we can solve for x. Although there are several ways to solve for x, the easiest way is probably to multiply both sides of the equation by 10y which will eliminate all fractions. The result after that manipulation is 5y = 2y + 10 and y=10/3 or 3 1/3.
The correct answer is A.
Good job to all those who got the correct answer:

Today's brain tease: Ratios, Percents and Proportion are very important mathematics concepts that every student or candidate needs to understand to be able to solve word problems and algebraic problems.
A lot of interview and aptitude questions are centered around this area, and we have quite an extensive collection of interview questions in this area in our library. It is imperative to understand these concepts, because they compose about 15% of questions you will come across in examinations.
Visit our library at www.efyco.com to view multiple interview questions, answers and solution on this subject area, and keep an eye on this space. We will attempt to break down the basic concepts and ideas behind solving interview questions related to proportions, ratios and percents.

Interview Question 6 (Rates): Pumping Machines A and B always operate independently and at their respective constant rates. When working alone, machine A can fill a water tank in 5 hours, and machine B can fill the same water tank in y hours. When the two machines operate simultaneously to fill the water tank, it takes them 2 hours to complete the job. What is the value of y ?
A. 3 1/3
B. 3
C. 2 1/2
D. 2 1/3
E .1 1/2

Interview Question 5: A group of UNIBEN students plan to rent a house together for x naira per month, which is to be shared equally among them. If two rather than three of them rent the house together, how much more, in terms of x, would each student have to pay for rent per year.
A. x/3
B. x/6
C. x/8
D. 2x
E. 3x/10
Try solving this before looking at the solution below.
SOLUTION:
The answer is D.
This is a very tricky question, and one that is likely to be incorrectly answered (and was incorrectly answered !) by a lot of candidates because they did not completely read the question.
If three students rent the house together, the cost per person would be X/3 naira. If two students rent together, the cost per person would be x/2 naira. Thus, if only 2 students rent together, the increase in naira per person would be x/2-x/3 = (3x-2x)/6 = x/6. A lot of students would select B as the answer at this point, but on careful reading, you would realize that the question asked for the rent increase per year not per month. To calculate the increase per year, you would need to multiply x/6 by 12, which give 2x, and the answer is D.
A similar question appeared in a recently given aptitude examination, and a good percentage of the students selected B. This is one of the numerous ways that employers would use to determine candidates who pay a close attention to detail, and are not error prone. Make sure you read a question completely and clearly before answering it.
