HOW MUSIC DIRECTORS CAN BETTER MAXIMISE TIME FOR EFFICIENCY.

1. Select practical songs that your team can handle.

2. Songs should be assigned ahead of time.

3. Song leads should be scheduled according to their strengths ahead of time.

4. Adequate provision for song lyrics should be madeavailable and distributed in print to avoid the usageof phones during rehearsal time.

5. Rehearsal times should promptly be adhered to.

6. Rehearsal sessions could be divided into:

i. Vocalists only rehearsal sessions where song lyrics,arrangements, harmonies and expressions can be internalised;

ii. Musicians only rehearsal sessions where key,tempo, phrases, intros, breaks, interludes and outrosare run-through and discussed;

iii. A Combined rehearsal where both vocalists andmusicians come together to go over and perfect theroutine for an optimal performance.

Inability to give proper direction to the team.

A lively musical arrangement plays a vital role in the general output and quality of musical performances. A music director should be able to coordinate the dynamics of how the musicians express musical concepts and ideas. It is the music director’s duty to ensure that all singers and musicians adhere to the rules guiding harmony, tempo, keys and dynamics in general. An inability to give precise directions to the musicians could result in a discordant performance. Singers should also be guided on the best ways to express the different sections in each song to avoid under-performance.

A music director’s paramount asset is an ability to hear accurately, decipher the right harmonies in a song, distinguish between melodic intervals, identify and proffer corrections where singers are out of tune.

He/She should possess an extensive knowledge of rhythms, music styles, timbres of different instruments and give consistent directions on how performances should be.
