1892: When 10,000 Ijebu Warriors Said NO to the British Empire
Before Nigeria existed, the sovereign kingdoms of Yorubaland possessed immense wealth, sophisticated military discipline, and unyielding power. Chief among these was the Ijebu Kingdom.
When the British Empire tried to bully them into giving up control of their trade routes, the Awujale (King) and his chiefs gave a resounding answer: NO.
In May 1892, this defiance led to the historic Battle of Imagbon. An army of 10,000 elite Ijebu warriors stood their ground at the Yemoji River, deploying brilliant battlefield strategies and ancestral medicine to defend Yoruba sovereignty against the invading forces.
They weren't defeated by a lack of courage or strategy, but by a brutal technological shift. This was one of the first times the British unleashed the devastating Maxim machine gun in West Africa.
Though outgunned, the fierce resistance of the Ijebu remains a legendary testament to the raw power, organization, and uncompromising dignity of the Yoruba people.
Leave a comment to honor the unmatched power of our ancestors.

The future of YORUBALAND is in the hands of Yoruba women. Yoruba men are one of the most irresponsible group of people on earth when it comes to self preservation of their race and people.

We have great men in our midst in Yorubaland but the weak link that has continually served as the means of infiltration into YORUBALAND are Yoruba men. Most of the I am Yoruba but... are these irresponsible men. A Yoruba woman will rather keep quiet than continue to constitute nuisa;nce in public space like the men folk.

We have a societal decay because the older Yoruba women raised badly brought up Akebaje Yoruba boys with no single loyalty to their sisters and mothers.

The remedy is simple, more Yoruba women must take up leadership positions in YORUBALAND or we will perish. We must invest massively: in our women because they are naturally keepers and conservatives. They don't need to shout before they show their potentials to serve as cultural preservers.

Look at any posts, tweets or skits where Yoruba people are being rubbished, it is a badly: brought up Yoruba man behind it.

Yoruba Religion and Òrìsà

Do you know? The Yoruba religious system also gave birth to other practices such as Santería in Cuba and Candomblé in Brazil, carried by enslaved Yoruba people during the transatlantic slave trade.
