LASUED Hosts 2026 Wellness Lecture, Strengthens Partnership with Illinois University, USA

In a remarkable move to maintain healthy living within the University Community, the ever-proactive Management team of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) on Thursday 21st May 2026, hosted its 2026 Wellness Lecture at Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hall, Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus.

The lecture, titled “Workplace Wellness: Promoting Health and Preventing Disease,” was delivered by Dr. Morounkeji Akin-Olugbemi, MD, MPH, an Assistant Professor (Clinical) at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria.

The event highlighted the university’s efforts to institutionalize workplace health and advanced discussions on a proposed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), USA

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, in her opening remarks, described the lecture as a strategic discussion on life, productivity, and sustainable development.

“The workplace is not only a site of labour; it is also a site of living. It is where people think, plan, teach, research, mentor, serve, administer, innovate, collaborate, worry, celebrate, and sometimes silently struggle,” she said.

Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye emphasized that wellness is crucial to institutional performance. “When health is weak, productivity declines; when wellness is neglected, institutions suffer; when prevention is ignored, disease becomes more expensive than death,” she stated.

She detailed LASUED’s initiatives under its A.C.H.I.E.V.E. agenda, including monthly staff aerobic exercises, a strengthened Health Centre, and early detection campaigns. She also noted the university’s perfect score in the recent NUC accreditation, with all 66 programs receiving full accreditation.

On mental health, she remarked, “A worker may be present physically and yet absent emotionally.” She called for increased counseling, mentoring, and humane leadership within the institution.

“The body often whispers before it screams. Wisdom lies in listening early,” she said, encouraging regular blood pressure and blood sugar checks, healthier diets, and sufficient sleep. She added that “Wellness is not an elderly person’s concern; it is a life-course responsibility.”

During the lecture, Dr. Akin-Olugbemi identified hypertension, prediabetes, and obesity as pressing public health issues in Nigeria. She cited research indicating that about 30 percent of Nigerians live with high blood pressure, often with low awareness and treatment rates.

She pointed out that prediabetes affects between 12.5 million and 15.8 million adults in Nigeria. “Prediabetes can be reversed, but only if we act early,” she emphasized.

Dr. Akin-Olugbemi recommended the CDC Worksite Health ScoreCard as a helpful framework for designing institutional wellness initiatives. She also referenced WHO guidelines encouraging 150 to 300 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly, along with muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days a week.

She urged attendees to take personal responsibility for their health. “Monitor your blood pressure regularly. Eat a healthy diet. Stay physically active,” she advised.

The Vice-Chancellor described the UIC partnership as part of a shared global goal. “From Lagos to Chicago, from Africa to America, the human desire is the same: to live well, work well, age well, and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.

UIC, Chicago’s only public Research 1 institution with around 35,000 students, offers opportunities for joint research, faculty and student exchanges, and access to facilities, including the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center.

In her closing remarks, Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye urged all stakeholders: “Let wellness not end as a lecture in this hall. Let it become a lifestyle in our homes, a culture in our offices, a policy in our institutions, and a commitment in our national life.”

The session was attended by university management, academic staff, students, and guests, with participants encouraged to apply the lecture’s recommendations in their daily lives across the campus community.

LASUED Holds 3rd Inaugural Lecture, Calls for Collective Action to Safeguard Nigeria’s Adolescents

The Lagos State University of Education, on Wednesday 20th May, 2026, hosted its third inaugural lecture at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hall, Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus.
The lecture, titled “Stormy Seas of Adolescence: Stakeholder Contract in the Advancement of Normalcy,” was delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of LASUED, Professor Morufu Adedayo Daodu of Counseling Psychology in the Department of Guidance and Counseling, College of Specialized and Professional Education (COSPED).

This event marked a significant milestone in the university’s history, being the first inaugural lecture held in the College of Specialized and Professional Education, as well as in the Department of Guidance and Counseling.
In her opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Education, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, presented the citation of the inaugural lecturer, describing him as an accomplished scholar, administrator, counselor, mentor, servant of God, distinguished psychologist, and educationist whose academic journey demonstrates resilience, perseverance, and determination.

According to Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye, the inaugural lecturer began his academic journey at the institution’s legacy college before advancing through the ranks to become a lecturer and later a professor. She noted that he earned both his Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Education degrees in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Lagos before pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Ibadan.

She further stated that Prof. Daodu was appointed Professor of Guidance and Counseling in July 2025 and currently serves as the substantive Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor commended the lecturer for demonstrating visionary leadership through innovative ideas and strategic measures aimed at enhancing academic standards, institutional effectiveness, and operational efficiency within the university.

Concluding the citation, Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye described Prof. Daodu as a respected voice among youths across different states in Nigeria.

Delivering the lecture, Prof. Daodu reflected on his personal academic journey, emphasizing his passion for Guidance and Counseling as a chosen profession.
He described adolescence, covering ages 10 to 19, as a fragile yet critical developmental stage involving biological maturation, psychological growth, emotional adjustment, social transitions, and identity formation.“Adolescents are not simply children becoming adults. They are navigating stormy developmental seas, and whether they survive those seas depends largely on who is steering alongside them,” he stated.

The professor also highlighted his research contributions, noting a significant gap in the literature concerning adolescents’ career development, which he said has often been overshadowed by studies on sexuality, drug abuse, and risky behaviors. He called for greater scholarly and policy focus on career guidance, occupational information seeking, and career planning for adolescents.

Using a powerful metaphor to conclude his lecture, Prof. Daodu described adolescence as a bridge between childhood and adulthood, emphasizing that “the bridge must not collapse.”
He challenged stakeholders including families, schools, government agencies, communities, mental health professionals, religious organizations, technology experts, and policymakers to assume deliberate and strategic responsibility for the nation’s adolescents.

“The future of Nigeria depends on the adolescents of today. If we abandon the bridge, we abandon the nation,” he said.

The inaugural lecture was attended by members of the university management, academic staff, students, and guests.

LASUED Students Sensitized on S*xual, Gender-Based Violence and Digital Safety

At the seminar workshop themed “Building Safer Campuses in Lagos State,” students of Lagos State University of Education were sensitized on the dangers of sexual and gender-based violence as well as the importance of digital safety and personal protection.

The one-day programme, organized by the Lagos State Domestic and S*xual Violence Agency in collaboration with the Directorate of S*xual and Gender-Based Violence of the Lagos State University of Education, was held on Thursday 7th May, 2026 at the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Hall.

The workshop, popularly known as the Purple Lagos Campus Activation Programme, was designed to engage students on issues relating to technology, finance, lifestyles, and gender awareness.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Centre for Response and Prevention of S*xual and Gender-Based Violence, Dr. Elegbede Christie-Bola, appreciated the institution’s management for providing the platform for the programme. She also commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, for maintaining zero tolerance toward all forms of abuse on campus.

According to her, the centre was established to educate and empower individuals on how to protect and defend themselves where necessary against all forms of sexual and gender-based violence.

The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and S*xual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Adeniyi, who was ably represented by Mr. Akinde Emmanuel, said the campus activation programme had been ongoing for the past four years to sensitize and equip students on issues surrounding sexual and gender-based violence, preventive measures, and the steps survivors can take in seeking help.

He described sexual and gender-based violence as harmful acts involving sexual, physical, psychological, emotional, or mental abuse carried out against a person’s will.

“S*xual and gender-based violence has been happening for years, and we must all join hands together to fight against it.

The effects can lead to depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts,” he said.

He further encouraged students to speak up whenever they witness abuse.
“If you see something, say something. Help survivors report incidents, document evidence, and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice. Survivors should also reach out to the Domestic and S*xual Violence Agency for assistance,” he added.

Another facilitator at the event, Mr. Gabriel, enlightened students on digital safety and personal data protection as shields against technology-facilitated gender-based violence.

Speaking on the dangers of excessive exposure on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, he warned students to be cautious about the personal information they share online.

According to him, cybercriminals and online predators often exploit personal data shared on digital platforms for harmful activities including cyberbullying, stalking, blackmail, and doxxing.
He noted that unlike traditional games such as Suwe, Ayo, and Tenten played in the past, many young people today spend more time online, leaving behind digital footprints that may never disappear.

Mr. Gabriel advised students to reduce the amount of personal information they disclose online in order not to fall victim to predators who could use such information maliciously.

He also encouraged victims of online abuse to report incidents through platforms such as StopNCII.org and MyLawBrella.

LASUED Directorate of Guidance, Counselling and Career Development Sensitizes Final-Year Students on Life Post University’s Journey

The Directorate of Guidance, Counseling and Career Development at Lagos State University of Education( LASUED) held a seminar for final-year students on Wednesday, 6th May 2026, aimed at preparing them for life after graduation. The focus was on career choices, relationships, and marriage.

The event took place at the Oluremi Tinubu Hall on the Oto/Ijanikin Main Campus with the theme “Love, S*x, and Discipline: Dating with Purpose and Preparing for Marriage Beyond Feelings.”

In her opening remarks, Director of the Directorate of Guidance, Counseling, and Career Development, Prof. Asikhia Olubusayo described graduation as a transition into adulthood and greater responsibility. She emphasised the need for students to develop discipline, emotional intelligence, and intentionality in relationships. She noted that successful marriages require more than attraction, describing marriage as both a “Business and a Ministry” founded on shared values, commitment, and mutual understanding.

Also speaking at the seminar, the Acting Dean, Student's Affairs, Dr. Dawodu R.A. reaffirmed the university's commitment to the holistic development of students beyond academics. He explained that the period after graduation is a critical phase when students make major decisions about careers and personal relationships. He advised students to approach relationships with discipline and purpose, urging them to consider important compatibility factors such as genotype, shared vision, emotional stability, and financial readiness, rather than relying solely on emotional attraction.

Delivering the keynote address, CEO of Renee Golden Multi-Ventures, Mrs Adenike Apeji emphasized the importance of marriage in nation- building. She described the family as the foundation of society and explained the difference between customary and statutory marriages under Nigerian law. She noted that cohabitation without legal backing does not constitute marriage. Admonitions against poor relationship decisions were issued, linking many life challenges to a lack of guidance, and students were encouraged to make informed and deliberate choices. She also praised Vice Chancellor Prof. Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye for prioritizing student welfare.

The seminar concluded with a call for students to build responsible lives and contribute to stronger families and society.

LASUED Hosts FUSTECH Pioneering Management on Courtesy Visit, Discusses Partnership

The effective management of Lagos State University of Education, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, hosted their counterparts from the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, on a courtesy visit at the Multimedia Complex Room of the Vice-Chancellor's Office on Thursday 7th May, 2026.

The discussion between the two parties focused on a proposed collaborative effort and consultation initiated by FUSTECH management, as a pioneering leadership of the university in its vision to advance the recently established university.

In her remarks, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye warmly welcomed the visitors and provided a brief history of the university’s transformation from a college to a university. She noted that LASUED is now an institution where every candidate wants to study due to the credible work done by the management so far. "Our admission status is now increasing because people are now believing in us as a university," she added, while acknowledging strong support from the Lagos State Government.

Furthermore, she encouraged the visiting team, as pioneering Principal Officers, to be prepared to make sacrifices, serve with sustained energy, and work closely with their Governing Council.

While assuring them of areas for collaboration, including staffing and facilities, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye emphasized that collaboration is vital for a university's growth. She stressed the need for FUSTECH management to establish their university’s anthem and slogan for upcoming tasks and to carry their souvenirs everywhere they go, as this will enhance their PR efforts.

In what appears to be major news for guardians and candidates seeking admission to LASUED, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the JAMB cut-off mark for this academic year's admission into the university is set at 185.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor and leader of the visitors from FUSTECH, Professor Kazeem A. Oshokoya, commended the LASUED management team for their inspiring transformation journey. He noted that their courtesy visit is driven by the desire to exchange ideas with an established institution like LASUED. "We find it necessary to visit LASUED to establish a symbiotic relationship and seek support in the areas of staff relations, use of facilities, and resources assessment," he stated.

Other LASUED Principal Officers present at the meeting included Deputy Vice-Chancellors (Academic and Administration) Professor Daodu Morufu Adedayo and Professor Sh*ttu Morufudeen Adeniyi; Registrar, Mr. Akinfemiwa Opeoluwa Akinlabi; Bursar, Mr. Ganiu Ajose Adeniyi; and University Librarian, Professor Imam Abayomi. The Deputy Registrar in the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mrs. Sami Omolara, and Principal Assistant Registrar, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Soares Olumiyiwa, also attended.
