Why is the cell referred to as the basic, structural, and functional unit of life?

The cell is called the basic structural and functional unit of life because:

1. Structural Unit:
All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. Cells form the building blocks of the body, just as bricks form a building. Tissues, organs, and organ systems are all composed of cells.

2. Functional Unit:
All vital life processes take place within cells. Functions such as:

Respiration (energy production)

Nutrition

Excretion

Growth

Reproduction

Response to stimuli

are carried out by cells. The activities of an organism depend on the activities of its cells.

3. Smallest Unit of Life:
A cell is the smallest part of an organism that can perform all the characteristics of life independently.

Conclusion:
Since cells make up the structure of all living organisms and perform all essential life functions, they are considered the basic structural and functional units of life.
