IS IT OKAY FOR TEACHERS TO BECOME TOO FAMILIAR WITH STUDENTS?

This is a question every teacher should sit down and answer.

Here’s my take as Teacher Bright 👇

1. FEAR IS NOT THE GOAL
A teacher shouldn't be feared.
But a teacher MUST be respected at all times.
And respect is commanded, not demanded.

2. FRIENDLY ≠ FAMILIAR
We must learn to be friendly with our learners.
Let them know you care. Let them ask questions.
But friendliness should never cross into "we are now buddies" territory.

3. BALANCE IS EVERYTHING
The job is to balance 2 things:
Warmth + Discipline
Kindness + Strictness

When you get the balance right, students learn better and classroom control becomes easier.

Students don’t need another friend.
They need a teacher who is approachable, but still holds the line.

What do you think teachers?
Where do you draw the line between being friendly and being too familiar?

Let’s discuss in the comments 👇

Online teaching has made me become very lazy .

Before I started online tutoring, I was a part time teacher.
I was always going from one school to another. From one tutorial center to the next.

In a day, I could go to 6 different schools.
Lagos traffic. Lesson notes. Tired legs. But I was moving.

But when I started getting online teaching gigs... I gradually started reducing the number of schools I work with.

And now, it’s almost resumption time for schools and I’m here thinking about my life.

Don’t get me wrong, I love classroom teaching a lot.
The students, the energy, the connection. I really do.

But I’ve just become too used to staying home and doing my online classes.

Wake up, press my Laptop, teach, eat, scroll, teach again.

I’ve even become an online shopper 😂
The other day I spent 150k that I didn’t budget for, shopping dresses and sandals online.
Just because I could, and because "delivery will bring it".

Now, everytime I have something to do and it requires that I step outside the house, the first question I ask myself is:
"Is there a way to get this thing done online, without having to go outside?"

I’m getting overly used to staying indoors.
And sincerely... I’m loving it.

But resumption is here.

Teachers, how are you all preparing to go back outside?
Because I need to find my "outside leg" again o 😅

"Mrs Bright, I've got gist for you." 😂

That was the first thing my 11pm learner said the moment she logged in yesterday.

At first I smiled... then I saw an opportunity.

Me: "Really? You have gists for me? Okay then, I'll allow you to give me every detail of your gist ONLY after we're done with class. And you must concentrate totally."

Her: "YES! YES!! YES!!! I'll concentrate well so you can listen to my gist after class" 🔥

And guess what? We had one of our most effective classes that night.

After class, she told me ALL about her french fries and her new friend.
She even taught me how to make french fries with Irish potatoes 😂🍟

Indeed, I am a blessed tutor.
It's the little moments like this that remind me why I love what I do.

My student told me today:
"Mrs Bright, I want to be a Yahoo girl when I grow up."

I was calm. Then I asked her why.

She said: "All the Yahoo boys I know have big cars, live in fine houses and wear designer.
Going to university for years just to earn peanuts is a waste of time."

I wasn’t surprised.

Because this is what our children are seeing every day.

So I sat her down and began to explain to her..

Wealth that comes from stealing from people is not wealth. It’s a prison with nice packaging.
It ends in tears, jail, or a life of fear.

And then we talked about EDUCATION.

We’ve been telling our children: "Go to school to make money."

That’s where we got it wrong.

You don’t go to school to get money.

You go to school to get KNOWLEDGE.

Knowledge opens your eyes.

Knowledge helps you see opportunities.

Knowledge helps you build something, solve problems, and THEN create wealth.

School is the gateway. Not the ATM.

But beyond school, we must teach VALUES.
Integrity. Patience. Hard work. Perseverance. Honesty.

Because without values, knowledge becomes dangerous.

That’s why we’re seeing more scams and fraud every day.

Parents, Teachers, Mentors . Let’s talk to these children.

Let’s show them other examples of people who made money the right way.

Let’s remind them: Fast money fades. Character lasts.

The future of this country is sitting in our classrooms right now.

What are we teaching them?

Ifeanyi Eze Thank you so much ma'am for making this big opportunity available for diligent Nigerian women.

I am excited about the chance to contribute to this initiative to provide quality online education to children in Guyana, South America.

I am an experienced online educator with several years of experience teaching both lower and upper grade learners. My teaching philosophy is centered on clarity, engagement, and real-life application.

I specialize in breaking down complex mathematical expressions into relatable, real-life instances to ensure students understand concepts deeply and not just for exams. I also teach English Language and Basic Science effectively, with a strong focus on reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills.

I would like to be considered for the opportunity to teach and impact learners in south America.

I am proficient in lower grade and upper grade subjects as well and I'm open to learning and adopting methods that would help make my impact more effective.

Why I'm a a strong fit for this opportunity.

1. Student-centered approach: I tailor lessons to each child’s learning pace to build confidence and mastery.

2. Results-driven: My goal is understanding, retention, and improved academic performance.

3. Availability: I am fully available and committed to the schedule: 9pm - 1am WAT, Mondays to Saturdays.

4. Adaptability: I am eager to be trained on the Guyana curriculum and to deliver lessons in alignment with required standards.

I am a dedicated graduate who is passionate about educational impact. I believe in working hand in hand with parents and institutions to raise globally competitive learners.

Thank you for opening this door for Smart Nigerians.

I am ready to represent us with excellence, diligence, and professionalism. 🇳🇬 🇬🇾.

I look forward to the formal application process.

I fixed a 10pm class with my online student yesterday.

After my 8pm class, I decided to use the 2 hours break to do some reading. But I slept off... right in my office.

I didn’t wake up until past 11pm.

The guilt hit hard. Seeing my learner’s missed calls on WhatsApp DM was more than enough. I was pained. I didn’t plan to sleep off.

Immediately, I apologized to the learner and her parents. I took full responsibility and we’ve booked makeup classes.

Perfection isn’t the goal. Consistency and integrity is.

Moments like this remind me that I really need to balance work and rest to avoid burnout.

In over a year of teaching online, I’ve never experienced this. But it reminded me how much of a human I am, and how much rest I need.

In all, I sincerely pray my learner’s parents don’t see me as an unserious teacher, because I’m not.

In fact, my classes are one of the reasons I smile every day.

To my fellow teachers: Rest is not laziness. It’s part of the work.

Here's a beautiful moment in my day.

In my online class today,
I was teaching the Long Division method to my pupil.

After her second trial, she got the first question right and screamed:
"Oh! Now I get it. It's not even difficult!"

And that statement made me smile.

For me, teaching is more than just impacting knowledge.
It’s helping my learners realize how incredibly brilliant they already are. ✨
