What did the Bible actually mean when it said someone could “redeem the tithe”?
Leviticus 27 reveals something many people overlook: certain tithes could be bought back by paying their value plus one-fifth — 20%.
But then something interesting happens when the Bible talks about livestock. The tenth animal was treated differently. It could not simply be exchanged or redeemed.

Episode VII Description — Jacob’s Vow
Jacob left Beersheba with nothing but a staff, a journey ahead of him, and uncertainty behind him. But in the wilderness of Bethel, everything changed.
That night, Jacob slept with a stone beneath his head—and dreamed of a staircase reaching from earth to heaven, with angels ascending and descending.
Then God spoke.
God promised Jacob His presence, protection, descendants, land, and the continuation of the promise given to Abraham and Isaac.
Jacob woke up in awe:
“Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.” — Genesis 28:16
Then Jacob made a vow.
And at the very end of that vow came a statement that has shaped centuries of discussion about the tithe:
“And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.” — Genesis 28:22
But here's the question:
Was Jacob giving a tenth to make God bless him—or was he responding to a promise God had already made?
And where did Jacob actually give that tenth?
