I was in primary 4 when a notable family within the neighborhood lost their father. Their father, a well-respected man in the community came back from the mosque that night earlier than expected to retire to bed and before 10 pm he was no more. We were young but not oblivious to what was going on around us. That was the first time of having to lose someone recognizable to me.
As a Muslim, he was to be buried the next morning with the families expecting the rest of his children to converge before he would be shrouded. I and a friend who happens to be the granddaughter of the deceased were on our way to school the next day when we met her mother as she stays with her grandmother. She was trying to narrate what happened to her mother when her mother cheerfully told her that she saw Alhaji ( the deceased) as she was coming now which was what caused her delay in arriving early to give her her stipend.
We looked at each other and chorused; which Alhaji? She replied, my daddy of course.
Èmi ní ti'yin totoo, we ran back home without waiting for her to continue her story🤣🤣🤣.
Fortunately, before she got home, people already accost her to pay their condolence. She believed non and insisted on having met Alhaji that morning as they had a chit-chat before getting to the place. Till she was shown her father's co**se, she was still in doubt.
