Nigeria at 64: Primetouch College marks Independence with Fanfare

Lagos - Primetouch College, a Leading Secondary educational Institution in Alimosho, Lagos State, on Monday, 30th of September 2024 celebrated Nigeria's 64th Independence Day anniversary with pomp and circumstance. The event, which took place at the Hostel hall, College premises, Obadore, was attended by students, teachers and other stakeholders.

In his address, the Principal of Primetouch College, Mr. Ozor Fredrick, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the country's 64th Independence Day. He emphasised the Importance of unity, hardwork and dedication in building a great nation. Mr. Frederick also commended the previous struggles of the founding fathers of Nigeria for their vision and sacrifices, which have made the country what it is today.

Speaking Further, He posited that the school is an agent of political socialization, therefore, it's Incumbent upon her to Inculcate in learners political consciousness. The Principal stressed as well, the Importance of upholding democracy which should not be undermined.

Delving into the objectives of National Policy on Education, NPE, Mr. Fredrick averred the five objectives which are; A free and democratic society, A united, strong and self-reliant nation, A just and egalitarian society; A great and dynamic economy and A land of Pride and opportunities for all citizens.

He expressed with dismay about the Giant of Africa - Nigeria's Educational sector is yet to achieve the objectives. He however, urged the students to embrace the values of patriotism, discipline, and perseverance in their academic pursuits. The Sagacious Principal, further, encouraged them to strive for excellence and be proud of their Nigerian heritage.

Mr Frederick while bringing his address to a close reiterated the Importance of education in nation-building and admonished the students to take their studies seriously.

The Vice Principal, Mr. Ben Okpara expatiated the History of Nigeria's Independence Day. He narrated copiously the etymology of Nigeria as from 1862 when the British colony aimed to stop slavery upon their arrival. According to him; Lagos was amalgamated with southern Nigeria to form colony and Protectorate of southern Nigeria.

In 1914 , The Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria was merged with Northern Nigeria to form NIGERIA .

The Vice Principal academics further stated that Individuals started moving the motion for Independence, the first motion officially was from Herbert Macaulay who is also known as Father of Nationalism.

He added that in 1958 , Remi Fani-Kayode moved the motion for Independence and exactly 1st of October 1960, Nigeria became Independent. Throughout the 64 years of Independence, Military government ruled for 35 years while Civilian government ruled for 29 Years. According to him, Military government recorded more achievements in contrast to Civilian government.

The highlight of the event was the Quiz competition on History and Current Affairs of Nigeria where Year 11 class clinches the first position, Spelling Bee Competition and the Finish-the-Lyrics saga.

The event ended with a granded finale of music and dance, as the students and staff of Primetouch College celebrated Nigeria's 64th Independence Day with joy and enthusiasm. The atmosphere was electric , and the audience was left in high spirits.

In attendance were prominent Personalities, Including the Principal, Mr. Ozor Frederick, Vice Principal academics, Mr. Ben Okpara, The Vice principal admin, Mrs Odunayo Blessing amongst others.

Also in attendance were students on Teaching Practice exercise from Lagos State University, and other stakeholders. The event was indeed a memorable one, as Primetouch College demonstrated its commitment to promoting Nigeria's Cultural heritage and fostering a sense of national pride among its students.

As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Day, Primetouch College has shown that the country's future is bright. The students of Primetouch college are the Leaders of tomorrow, and they have demonstrated that they are ready to take on the challenges of nation-building. The event was a testament to the power of education in shaping the minds of young people.The College has shown that with dedication, hardwork, and a commitment to excellence, Nigeria can achieve greatness.
