The long holiday is a great time for children to grow beyond the classroom.

Here are five simple things children can do this week:

📖 Read a storybook for 20 minutes each day.
🧮 Practise a few maths questions.
📝 Keep a holiday journal.
🍳 Learn one new life skill, such as helping in the kitchen or organizing their room.
🎲 Play educational games that encourage thinking and problem-solving.

A little consistent learning each day helps them return to school more prepared.

One of the most important words you can tell a child after marking their words is: You did well.

When you point out what they did well, you are building a child who believes in themselves.

Here are ten phrases that transformed the children I tutor:

1. Neat handwriting.

2. Good use of tenses.

3. I love your creativity.

4. Your ideas flowed well.

5. We would work on your spelling.

6. Excellent presentation.

7. Your punctuation is improving.

8. Good effort applied on this section.

9. You will get better with constant practice. This is your first attempt.

10. Nice try.

When you mark a child’s note with words like this: you are using red ink to light up a child’s esteem.

Not every issue a child has deserves your attention.

Sometimes, when they come to you saying:

“I can’t find my socks”
“My food is already cold”
“I am tired”

Before solving any problem, ask yourself this question: if I keep fixing everything for them, what happens when I am not there?

Allow them to struggle with age appropriate challenges. In many cases they will discover they are more capable than they thought.

Pray for them, watch them and step in when they have exhausted their effort not at the first sign of discomfort.

Children who are allowed to develop resilience don’t love their parents less. Instead they tend to value your support and appreciate your guidance when they truly need it.

The goal isn’t to raise children who depend on you for everything but children who can stand on their own while knowing they can come to you.
