WASSCE/UTME syllabuses are designed as three-year curricula, covering SS1 to SS3 (Year 10 to Year 12). By the time students reach SS3, they should have fully mastered all topics required for WASSCE/UTME exams. Ideally, the final year would be spent revising and reinforcing these objectives to ensure strong exam performance. However, this ideal is often not the reality.
In many cases, students reach SS3 without sufficient mastery of the material, making it necessary for teachers to re-teach the entire syllabus from scratch to get them ready for exams. This creates the challenging task of compressing a three-year curriculum into a few short months. The effects of this last-minute approach are significant: students struggle to understand complex concepts, feel intense time pressure, and may even lose confidence in their abilities, all of which affect their performance on exam day.
For students who have completed secondary school but still need to meet their O-Level requirements, the time frame can be even shorter. Often, they have only a maximum of six months to prepare, sometimes in tutorial centers that focus more on exam malpractice than actual learning. This reliance on shortcuts has discouraged students from beginning serious preparation early, contributing to widespread failures.
