As we mark World Mental Health Day 2025, we are honored to bring attention to this year’s vital theme: “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” In times of crisis, whether natural disasters, armed conflict, pandemics, or economic collapse, mental health challenges surge alongside physical devastation.

According to the WHO, nearly all people exposed to emergencies will experience psychological distress, and roughly 22 % of populations in conflict-affected settings may develop depression, anxiety, PTSD, or other serious mental health conditions. Yet, it is precisely under these hardest conditions that mental health (and psychosocial) support systems are most fragile: infrastructure is damaged, health staff are overwhelmed, supply chains break down, and service delivery becomes untenable. Ensuring that mental health services remain accessible, even in the heart of catastrophes, is not a luxury; it is a necessity for resilience, recovery, and dignity.

At Sages & Scribes Consultants, we stand firmly in solidarity with this mission and have long invested in building sustainable pathways for mental health support, especially through our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) interventions. Over the years, our EAP programming has delivered trauma-informed counseling, crisis response support, and capacity-building in organizations to help their teams withstand shocks and upheavals.

As part of this year’s World Mental Health Day, we are amplifying our voice to call for stronger systems integration: embedding mental health response into emergency planning, training first responders in psychological first aid, and leveraging technology (e.g., tele-counseling) to circumvent distance and access barriers. By championing EAP as a core element of organizational resilience, Sages & Scribes demonstrates how even in non-disaster settings, workplaces can model what accessible, compassionate, scalable service provision truly means, so employees in crises, emergencies, or everyday stressors know they are never alone.

Let us hold leaders accountable to embed mental health in emergency response plans, resource these services, and ensure that both survivors and responders alike have access to support.
