In Igbo culture, sometimes even the way Ọjị breaks can tell a story.

If you grew up around Igbo traditions, you’ve probably seen kola nut brought out during a visit, meeting, ceremony, introduction, celebration or important gathering.

But here’s the part you may not have known: the number of lobes revealed when the kola nut is broken can carry symbolic meaning.

Depending on the tradition or community, different numbers of lobes have been associated with different ideas, from strength and achievement to peace, blessings, fertility, abundance and spiritual connection.

So next time someone breaks Ọjị, pay attention.

Knowing a few Igbo words is one thing. Knowing how to greet properly is a whole different conversation.

Because in Igbo, greetings can tell you a lot about respect, age, relationship, and even what someone is doing at the time.

So yes, you know “Ndewo”, but what do you say when you’re greeting an elder? Welcoming a visitor? Meeting someone eating? Or speaking to someone who is older than you?

We put together some proper Igbo greetings and responses you should know beyond the basics.

An Igbo man’s house could be a whole community.

Before the duplex, there was the compound.

And that compound could hold much more than a man, his wife and children.

Depending on the time, place and circumstances, you could find extended family, in-laws, apprentices (Nwa-boi), workers, dependants, visitors and, historically, people living under systems of servitude or slavery.

The home was not just where you came back to sleep.

It could be where family gathered, businesses grew, apprentices learned, visitors were welcomed and responsibilities were shared.

And while the traditional compound has largely given way to apartments and duplexes, one thing still feels very familiar:

An Igbo home can still have “just one more person” staying there.

Your mum was a language teacher this whole time.

She didn't use flashcards.
She didn't download an app.
She probably never called it “language preservation.”

She just said:

“Kwuo ya n’Igbo.” -- Say it in Igbo.

And when you got it wrong? She corrected you.

Your grandmother told you stories.
Your aunties taught you the meaning of names.
Your mother answered you in Igbo even when you replied in English.
Family gatherings gave you another place to hear the language.

And somehow, without a formal lesson, you learned.

That is the power of how Igbo women have passed the language down, through everyday
conversations, correction, repetition, stories, songs, names, relationships and community.

But now, the baton is in our hands.

If you're Gen Z and you can understand Igbo but struggle to speak it, you're not alone.
And being fluent doesn't have to start with perfection.

Start with one word.
One sentence.
One conversation.

Because the language your mothers and grandmothers kept alive through everyday life
deserves to have a place in our everyday life too. ❤️

Who said Igbo culture can’t have steeze?
