In this new article, Olasupo O. Thompson, Surajudeen Oladele and Olawale YEMISI remind us that:
In 1987, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Safe Motherhood Initiative to address the global mortality crisis, with a specific focus on developing countries. The initiative aimed to make safer and less burdensome by improving access to services, promoting skilled birth attendance, and strengthening maternal systems.
, grappling with alarmingly high maternal mortality rates, became a focal point for these efforts. This article examines the state of maternal healthcare prior to the introduction of the Safe Motherhood Initiative and evaluates Nigeria's response during 1987–1988.

In this article, Ganiyat Alli of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign argues that “race has been in existence before the colonial government. Several societies exist with distinct colour differentiation in Morocco, Zanzibar, and even Rwanda prior to colonial intrusion. It must however be noted that in Rwanda for example, Christianity proved to be an integral part of the genocide culture. The Catholic missionaries played diabolical role in racialising the Hutu/Tutsi difference”. - History of Ethnicity and Race in African History: The Schools of Thought
