Greatest Akokites,
Today, we raise the toast to celebrate a Distinguished Akokite, the number one citizen of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola:, FAS, OON, the first Female Vice-Chancellor of our reputable alma mater on her birthday.
Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos is a stellar of enviable feats and achievements, locally & internationally.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) in 1982 from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University). She was later to have a Master’s degree in Medical Microbiology with Distinction from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 1990. She then obtained a Diploma in Biomedical Techniques from the University of Wales, College of Medicine, Cardiff in 1993 and in 1998, she earned her Ph.D from the same University.
Professor Ogunsola, who is a professor of Medical Microbiology is a fellow and member of many professional bodies & associations, both national and international. She joined the University of Lagos as Lecturer I in 1995, became a Senior Lecturer in 1997, an Associate Professor in 2004 and a full Professor in 2008.
Since 1998, she has attracted over N4 billion to the University of Lagos in teaching, research, and capacity-building grants. She has thirteen (13) completed grants and eight (8) ongoing grants to her credit.
A woman of many firsts in the history of UNILAG leadership succession, she emerged as the 1st female Provost of the College of Medicine and served meritoriously from 2013 -2016. In 2017, she was appointed the 1st Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), a position with which she initiated and hosted the first ever UNILAG International Week.
In 2020, she emerged the 1st female Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG. Her eventual emergence as successor to the 12th Vice-Chancellor was, therefore, a pleasant culmination of events that confirmed her date with destiny.
