From Waste to Wealth: Nasarawa Trains 90 Women to Turn Plastic into Profit

What used to choke drainage channels and litter Nasarawa’s streets is now becoming bags, shoes, beads, and sculptures. The Department of Conventional and Renewable Energy, under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, is transforming polythene and plastic waste into marketable products and livelihoods across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The latest push in the campaign against climate change and greenhouse gas emissions played out this week at Government Science Secondary School, Lafia, where 90 women completed intensive training on waste-to-wealth innovation.

The program is simple but powerful: convert waste polythene and plastic into raw materials for bags, shoes, beads making, sculptures, and other crafts. The goal is employment creation and building a network of women ambassadors who will teach others what they’ve learned.

Declaring the event open, the Permanent Secretary representing the Honourable Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation applauded His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule for driving the initiative.

“His Excellency is a believer in industrialization and technological self-reliance,” the Permanent Secretary said. “This program aligns with his vision to turn our environmental challenges into economic opportunities.

Officials say the project goes beyond waste management. By tackling plastic pollution, the ministry is also addressing climate change and greenhouse gas emissions through practical mitigation strategies.

For the 90 women trained, the workshop marks a shift from dependence to enterprise. Equipped with new skills, they are expected to return to their communities as trainers and small business owners, spreading both income and environmental awareness.

With this model now active across all three senatorial districts, Nasarawa is betting that the solution to plastic waste won’t just come from disposal bins but from the hands of women turning trash into trade.

MSTI Holds Workshop on Electronic Documents Management System for Technical Colleges, Vocational Centres.

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MSTI) has organized a 3day training workshop on the adoption of Electronic Documents Management System (EDMS) for Technical Colleges and Vocational Skills Centres across the state on the 25th May 2026 at Abdullahi Ibrahim Vocational technology Institute Lafia.

The workshop, aimed at promoting digital transformation in educational institutions, brought together instructors, ICT personnel and administrators from various technical and vocational centres.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. John Ali Damina, who represented the Honourable Commissioner of the Ministry, said the vision of the ministry is to digitalize institutions in line with global technological advancement.

Dr. Damina noted that institutions willing to remain relevant and effective must embrace modern systems and processes.

“The Electronic Documents Management System is not merely a digital tool; it is a strategic platform that enhances record keeping, promotes transparency, improves access to information, strengthens institutional memory and increases operational efficiency,” he said.

He urged participants to take the training seriously, stressing that instructors and administrators are key drivers of knowledge transfer and institutional development.

Earlier, the Director of Technology Promotion and Innovation, Mr. John P. Apla, said the workshop was organized to improve participants’ understanding of EDMS and its importance in modern administrative and educational operations.

According to him, the training would equip ICT staff with practical skills in digital record creation, organization, storage and retrieval for effective management of institutional documents.
He added that the workshop would also promote efficient electronic workflow, collaboration tools, productivity and work ethics in schools.

In a paper presentation titled “Work Ethic and Productivity,” the Executive Secretary, Dr. Daniel Ewuga, described work ethic as the moral principles and values that guide behaviour and attitude in a professional environment.

He identified integrity, diligence, respect and reliability as important qualities needed to improve productivity and service delivery.

Dr. Ewuga emphasized the need for positive behavioural change and proper attitude toward work, adding that punctuality, honesty, accountability and dedication to quality service are essential for institutional growth.

Also presenting a paper, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr. Mohammed I. Wakema, explained that Electronic Documents Management System is a digital platform used for creating, storing, managing and sharing documents electronically.

He described EDMS as the backbone of a paperless office, noting that it transforms unstructured files into managed and traceable digital assets.

Mr. Wakema stated that the use of electronic documents reduces stress, saves time, improves administration and enhances staff collaboration

He further explained that digital tools such as computers, emails, WhatsApp, Zoom and Google Meet have become important components of modern office administration.

Another presentation on “Digital Record Creation, Organization and Storage Techniques” was delivered by Mr. Ayaka A. Emmanuel, while Hon. James A. Namo presented a paper on “Electronic Workflow Collaboration and Communication Tools.”
Hon. Namo described electronic workflow as the movement of documents electronically between offices and staff, replacing slow paper-based processes with faster and more efficient digital systems.

Highlights of the workshop included paper presentations, practical and technical sessions, as well as interactive question-and-answer sessions.
