NSM Quiz: FULafia students’ triumph demonstrates commitment to excellence – Kida

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, has commended students and staff of the institution’s Department of Microbiology for emerging winners of the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM) Quiz Competition.

Kida, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Ilemona Adofu, gave the commendation when Dr Obande Godwin Attah, Dr Osuyi Gerard Uyi and Mrs Angbalaga Gladys Abel led the victorious students to present the prize to the University's Management.

The competition, organised by the Nigerian Society for Microbiology, was held at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State.

The vice-chancellor said the feat had brought honour and recognition to FULafia, adding that its impact would endure beyond the competition.

He said: “Long after the competition is gone, the honour it brought to FULafia will be remembered across the length and breadth of the country. Indeed, this achievement has, significantly, added value to our University.”

Kida described the Department of Microbiology as one of the University’s most vibrant departments in the University, urging its staff and students to sustain the practices that had produced the achievement.

He said the students’ performance demonstrated FULafia’s commitment to integrity and excellence.

The Federal University of Technology, Minna, came second while Bingham University emerged third in the NMS Quiz Competition.

Adewale urges lecturers to adopt effective classroom management

Dr Adewale Adegoriola has urged lecturers to adopt effective classroom management strategies to create a conducive learning environment and improve students’ participation.

Adegoriola made the call while speaking on classroom management at a one-day staff training seminar organised by the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia).

The seminar, themed: “Academic Excellence in the Digital Age: Teaching, Research and AI Integration,” focused on improving teaching and learning practices.

Adegoriola described classroom management as the effective organisation of students, time, activities and interactions to enhance teaching and learning.

He identified planning, communication, engagement, relationship building and discipline as key components of effective classroom management.

According to him, proper classroom management promotes productive lectures, effective use of teaching time, respectful classroom interactions and active student participation.

He urged lecturers to set clear classroom expectations and address misconduct professionally through appropriate corrective measures.

Adegoriola added that effective classroom management would help create an engaging learning environment and motivate students to participate actively in academic activities.

FULafia don urges researchers to sharpen grant-writing skills

The Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Samson Dugga, has urged researchers to sharpen their grant-writing skills, saying effective proposals are crucial to attracting funding for research projects.

Dugga spoke at a one-day workshop organised by the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, FULafia, with the theme: “Academic Excellence in the Digital Age: Teaching, Research and AI Integration.”

He said that "grants are funds awarded to individuals or institutions to undertake specified projects and are generally non-repayable."

The don identified key components of a grant proposal as the executive summary, statement of need, project description, goals and objectives, methodology, evaluation, budget and sustainability plan.

He advised researchers to adhere strictly to funding guidelines, collaborate with relevant stakeholders and develop realistic timelines when preparing proposals.

Dugga cautioned participants against excessive use of jargon and unsupported assumptions, stressing the need for clarity, precision and compliance with funders’ requirements.

Effective assessment key to better learning, says FULafia don

An expert in the Department of Economics, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Dr Walter Ugwuoke, has stressed the importance of effective assessment in improving teaching and learning outcomes.

Ugwuoke made the call while speaking on the topic: “Effective Assessment Design and Marking Strategies,” where he described assessment as an integral part of the teaching and learning process.

He said assessment provides evidence of whether intended learning outcomes have been achieved, while also helping educators identify areas requiring improvement.

The don highlighted various forms of assessment, including summative, continuous and self-assessment.

He discussed principles of effective assessment design, marking schemes and appropriate marking strategies.

Ugwuoke urged educators to address common challenges associated with assessment and provide constructive feedback to learners.

He stressed that well-designed assessments should promote learning, encourage active participation and provide useful information that would help improve students’ academic performance.

He added that effective assessment remains essential to achieving meaningful educational outcomes.

FULafia, NASITDEA collaborate on AI, cybersecurity, data protection

The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has partnered with the Nasarawa State Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency (NASITDEA) to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance security of information systems.

The partnership was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding at the University’s Permanent Site Campus, recently.

Under the agreement, NASITDEA would support the provision of secure digital facilities, including a virtual digital forensics laboratory as well as other digital infrastructure.

The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, expressed his appreciation to the agency for the collaboration, describing it as an opportunity to boost the University’s digital capacity.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Prof. Ibrahim Ogiri Hassan, Kida called for maximisation of benefits of the partnership.

The Director-General of NASITDEA, Haruna Sani Sani said the collaboration would focus on training and knowledge-sharing in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data privacy and other emerging technologies.

He stressed the importance of secure systems, data protection, appropriate policies and skilled personnel in driving digital transformation.

FULafia V-C charges accountants to key into digital revolution

The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, has urged accounting staff and postgraduate students to acquire digital skills and embrace financial technology to remain relevant in the evolving world of work.

Kida made the call through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Partnerships, Prof. Ibrahim Ogiri Hassan, while declaring open a five-day workshop on "Digital Accounting and Financial Technology" organised by the Accounting Knowledge and Research Opportunity (AKARO) Centre of the University.

The vice-chancellor described the training as timely, stressing that continuous capacity building was necessary to bridge the gap between university education and labour market requirements.

He noted that technology had become a major driver of economic and social development, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained in their workplaces and areas of study.

“Training of this nature is another window for us to consolidate knowledge and opportunities so that Nigeria can be better than it is today,” he said.

The Director of AKARO, Dr Tijani Ahmed Ajayi, and a permanent secretary in the Office of the Nasarawa State Head of Service, Mrs Itinuke Chammang, separately, urged participants to maximise the opportunity afforded them by the training and share knowledge they would acquire with others.

The workshop, held at the AKARO centre Shendam road Lafia, was attended by academics and postgraduate students from the University.

Scholar urges colleagues to embrace change

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Ilemona Adofu, has urged academics to embrace change and continually improve their teaching and research skills.

Adofu made the call while declaring open a one-day workshop organised by the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, FULafia, with the theme: “Academic Excellence in the Digital Age: Teaching, Research and AI Integration.”

He stressed the importance of mentorship, saying academic excellence went beyond obtaining degrees to include the ability to effectively impart knowledge to students.

He highlighted the importance of research grant proposal writing, urging participants to learn from experienced academics and develop skills that would enhance their research output.

He advised academic staff to adapt to changing trends in the education sector without compromising standards, while maintaining hard work, commitment and dedication.

The workshop, held at the department’s boardroom, was attended by academics and postgraduate students from the University.
