Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre, Koko, has successfully concluded its two-day Staff Orientation Programme (2–3 October 2026) under the theme:

“Dedicated to the Young: Professionalism, Purpose and the Salesian Mission.”

The programme focused on Salesian identity, professional ethics, effective teaching, safeguarding, student discipline, safety, teamwork and institutional priorities, strengthening our collective commitment to the holistic formation of young people.

As we begin the new academic year, we move forward as one team, united by one mission: empowering young people through skills, character and purpose.

Why We Do This Work

We are often asked what we do. But perhaps the more important question is: why do we do it?

The answer begins with the young people we meet.

A young person can have ability, ideas and dreams, but still have very few opportunities around them. A child may need protection. A young person may leave school without a practical skill or a clear path to work. Another may be vulnerable to trafficking, unsafe migration or life on the streets simply because better options were not available.

We believe a young person's circumstances should not determine the rest of their story. That is why we work across communities in Nigeria and Niger to create opportunities for young people to learn, develop their abilities, stay safe and build towards a more secure future.

Our work takes many forms.

It may be a safe home for a child who needs protection. It may be a scholarship that helps a young person stay in school. It may be healthcare, technical and vocational training, entrepreneurship and life skills. It may be helping a graduate find an internship or connect with a job. It may also be helping young people understand the dangers of human trafficking and unsafe migration before they become vulnerable to them. And these are only some of the ways we serve.

So far, our work has reached more than 100 communities across Nigeria and Niger.

Behind that number are real people: children who have found safety, young people who have learned skills, families who have received support, graduates who have found opportunities and communities where new possibilities are taking shape.

We also know that this work cannot be done alone.
Our donors, partners, staff, volunteers and the communities we serve all have a part to play. Every opportunity created for a young person is possible because someone chose to support it, collaborate with us or simply believe that young people are worth investing in.

So, why do we do this work?

Because every young person deserves the opportunity to learn, to be safe, to develop their abilities, to work, to contribute and to build a future beyond the circumstances they started with.

That is why we continue.

A skill can change more than a person's hands. It can change what they believe is possible.

Every day, young people are learning skills, gaining experience, starting businesses and looking for opportunities to build a better future.
This is why we continue to invest in skills development, youth employment and vocational training.

The work is not always easy, and the results do not always come immediately. But every young person who gains a skill, finds an opportunity or becomes more confident about their future reminds us why the work matters.

A new week. A new opportunity to keep building.
