NSUK VC Clarifies FMC Keffi MoU, Says Partnership Is for Clinical Training, Not Ownership Transfer
The Management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has clarified that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, is strictly a collaborative academic and clinical training partnership and does not involve the transfer of ownership or management of the Federal Government-owned health institution.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, made the clarification during an interactive session with selected journalists held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in her office at the Senate Building, following public discussions and misconceptions surrounding the agreement.
Professor Liman explained that the MoU establishes a strategic framework through which both institutions will work together to strengthen medical education, clinical research, and healthcare service delivery while maintaining their separate identities and statutory responsibilities.
She stated that the collaboration is designed to support the training of students in the University's College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, particularly those pursuing programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, and other allied health disciplines.
"For the avoidance of doubt, the Memorandum of Understanding does not transfer the management or ownership of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, to Nasarawa State University, Keffi. Both institutions will retain their respective identities and statutory responsibilities while working synergistically to improve medical training and healthcare delivery," the Vice-Chancellor said.
According to Professor Liman, the partnership will provide NSUK students with access to FMC Keffi's laboratories, specialised medical equipment, and clinical facilities for practical instruction, mandatory clinical postings, industrial training, internships, and other hands-on learning experiences essential for producing competent healthcare professionals.
She further explained that, under the agreement, the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, will serve as the University's Teaching and Clinical Training Centre for its medical and allied health programmes, thereby enhancing the quality of professional training and expanding opportunities for experiential learning.
The Vice-Chancellor urged members of the public, stakeholders, and the media to disregard misleading reports suggesting that the University had taken over the management or ownership of the hospital. She advised that all information concerning the partnership should be obtained from official communications issued by the University and the Federal Medical Centre.
Professor Liman reaffirmed NSUK's commitment to forging strategic partnerships that promote academic excellence, innovation, and national development, expressing confidence that the collaboration would produce highly skilled healthcare professionals, strengthen clinical education, and contribute significantly to improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
