NSUK Law Clinic Visits Vice-Chancellor, Seeks Institutional Support

In a strategic move to strengthen clinical legal education and expand access to justice within the University and its host communities, the Law Clinic of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), on Thursday, April 16, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, at her office in the Senate Building.

The delegation, led by the Head of the Law Clinic, Jude Obinna Matthew, stated that the visit was aimed at formally introducing the Clinic to the University Management and seeking institutional support to advance its mission of providing legal assistance to indigent members of the University community.

In his remarks, the Head of the delegation commended the Vice-Chancellor for her visionary leadership and congratulated the University Management on the successful hosting of the 8th Combined Convocation Ceremony, which significantly elevated the institution’s national and international profile.

He described the NSUK Law Clinic as a student-driven, faculty-supervised initiative dedicated to promoting access to justice for underserved populations while equipping law students with practical legal skills and a strong commitment to public service.

Highlighting the Clinic’s achievements, he noted that the team had secured bail for 12 out of 40 inmates interviewed during a recent correctional centre visit. He further emphasized the Clinic’s impressive record in advocacy competitions, having emerged national champions in the Client Interview and Counselling Competition in 2021 and 2023, and second runners-up in 2026.

Other accomplishments include the provision of free legal services, capacity building through experiential learning, and the promotion of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) within and beyond the University.

The delegation concluded by appealing for sustained collaboration and support from the University Management to enable the Clinic to scale up its impact.

In her response, the Vice-Chancellor warmly received the delegation and commended the Law Clinic for its impactful contributions to legal education and community service. She stressed the importance of increasing the Clinic’s visibility to ensure that its services are widely known and accessible.

Professor Liman also advised the Clinic to collaborate closely with the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs and the University’s Legal Unit to address student-related disputes through Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms, thereby reducing the need for formal disciplinary proceedings.

She reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance institutional reputation and societal relevance.

Other members of the Management present at the meeting, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), the University Librarian, and the Personal Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor, also encouraged the Clinic to sustain its commitment to professionalism, innovation, and service excellence.

The visit concluded with a group photograph to commemorate the engagement.

The Inability To Count Votes An African Disease -Lumumba
***
“Africa has a problem with counting votes. In Africa, everybody wins an election. Nobody loses. In other parts of the world, they can have votes in 50 million, in hundreds of millions. But in Africa, our votes never get past 10 million. For some reason, when we are called upon to count our votes, we cannot do so. This is an African disease - the inability to count votes.

“Africans elect the leaders they deserve when they are given the vote. They are in the habit of electing thieves, and once they have elected the thieves, they expect the thieves to behave like angels when the people do not know what they want. The government they create is nothing but a confederacy of fools.” -Professor P.L.O Lumumba, Kenya
