“AN OPEN LETTER TO THE HONOURABLE COMMISSIONER FOR VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION,
NIGER STATE*
HON. ADAMU ABDULLAHI (MADAMIN KATCHA)
Dear Honourable Commissioner,
Warm congratulations once again on your well-deserved appointment as the Commissioner for Vocational and Technical Education, Niger State. Your emergence as a son of Katcha Community into this important office has rekindled hope among our people, particularly in the area of education and scientific development.
I write this open letter with deep concern and a strong sense of responsibility regarding the deplorable condition of Government Girls Science College, Katcha, the only boarding school in Katcha Local Government Area. As clearly evident today, the school is surrounded by thick bushes, dilapidated and abandoned buildings, collapsing infrastructure, unsafe classrooms, and an environment that is completely unfit for learning, teaching, or human habitation.
Successive visits by government officials during the administration of former Governor Abubakar Sani Bello raised hopes that this historic institution would be revived. Unfortunately, these visits amounted to nothing more than inspections and promises that were never fulfilled. Despite clear commitments made by the Governor at the time, no meaningful intervention followed.
It is even more painful that during that period, the then Commissioner for Works, Hon. Abdulmalik Cheche, who is also from Katcha, failed to follow up on these promises or translate them into action. The school management, in good faith, made several attempts to pursue the matter. They reached out through Hon. Rabiu Cooler of Katcha Ward and even paid a courtesy visit with a gift (dried fish) to the Commissioner’s office as a sign of respect and urgency. Regrettably, all these efforts yielded no results.
Furthermore, a delegation linked to SMA, the Honourable Member representing Katcha, Gbako, and Bida, reportedly sent Mrs. Eze to assess the condition of the school some time ago. Since then, the community has heard nothing, no report, no intervention, no feedback.
Honourable Commissioner, this school represents the future of the girl-child in Katcha. Its present condition is not only an educational failure but a moral one. Science and technology cannot thrive where classrooms are broken, roofs are falling, and students live in fear of their environment.
As our own, and now a key figure in government, we respectfully but firmly call on you to use your expertise, influence, and office to draw the urgent attention of His Excellency, the Governor of Niger State, to this neglected institution. We are not asking for miracles, only for commitment, follow-up, and genuine action.
History has given you a rare opportunity to be remembered as the leader who broke this long cycle of promises without results. The people of Katcha believe you will not look away from this responsibility.
