Mustapha is one of the most energetic personalities among us, he is a comrade with bold ideas, a strong voice, and a straightforward character. He doesn’t keep anything in his heart; he says things openly and moves on peacefully.

He loves sharing real-life stories, inspiring everyone with his belief that we must work hard and chase opportunities: “This Boko will not sustain us; let’s fight for money.”
A reminder that success requires effort and determination.

He also knows how to keep people refreshed with his jokes and playful moments, balancing seriousness with laughter.

Today, we celebrate him for his sincerity, courage, and contributions to our class and EXCOS team.
Well done, Comrade Musty!

Today’s Phytologist of the Day is Ramatu Ojonugwa 🌿

Ramatu is one of the most resilient people among us. From Level 1 up to today, she has faced challenges like every one of us, but what makes her unique is how she continues to push even when she feels exhausted. Many times she would say, “I am tired of this school,” but the fact that she is standing here today as a finalist shows her strength and patience. That is something that deserves genuine respect.

Ramatu also has a personality that brings life into the class. She jokes, she laughs, she makes comments that lighten the mood, and she does it not to create problems, but to make people around her feel free and connected. She is the type of person who keeps a space alive. The vibe she brings is warm, playful, and friendly.

She may not always speak about what she goes through, but she keeps going. That is quiet strength. That is resilience.

We celebrate her today,
Her journey is meaningful. Her presence has added joy to our class.
May Allah bless her plans after graduation and make her path easy. 🙏

Finalist of the Day: John Joseph Odeh

John has been our Class Rep from Level 1 up to today. From the beginning till now, he has shown patience, understanding, and respect for everyone. He listens before he speaks, he guides whenever guidance is needed, and he carries everyone along without discrimination.

He does not argue unnecessarily or create problems. He focuses on peace, unity, and progress. Anyone who has ever approached him for clarification or help knows how welcoming he is. He has always been available to explain, remind, and support.

One thing that makes him unique is that many departments change their class reps almost every semester or at every new level, because leadership is not easy. In our case, we never changed him. He remained our class rep because of his character, fairness, and the trust we have in him. Leadership is not by force. It is by attitude, and he has shown it clearly.

Today, we celebrate him not because he is perfect, but because he has been consistent, patient, and sincere throughout our journey.

Congratulations once again, John. May your life be bless.

🌳 PROJECT INSIGHT: My Research Journey Begins!

Every tree tells a story not just of growth, but of how it helps protect our planet.

As a Plant Science and Biotechnology finalist at Bayero University Kano (BUK), I’ve begun my Final Year Project titled:
“Carbon Stock Assessment by Tree Species.”

The goal of this research is to estimate how much carbon different tree species can store, a vital step in understanding their role in mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

My work involves identifying key tree species, measuring their growth parameters, and calculating their carbon storage capacity using standard ecological models.

I’ll be sharing insights, findings, and lessons throughout this journey — from data collection to analysis as I continue exploring how trees contribute to a greener and more sustainable environment.

I hope to connect with individuals, researchers, and organizations passionate about climate action, forestry, ecology, and sustainability.

Let’s learn, share, and build impact together 🌱🌍

🌱 Growing Media Preparation

Growing media is the material in which plants are grown. It must provide:
✅ Support for plant roots
✅ Adequate water retention
✅ Proper aeration
✅ Nutrients supply

1. Common Components of Growing Media

Soil – provides minerals & support.

Sand – improves drainage & aeration.

Peat moss / Coco peat – retains water & keeps the medium light.

Compost / Farmyard manure – supplies nutrients.

Perlite / Vermiculite – improves porosity and water-holding capacity.

2. Steps in Preparing Growing Media

1️⃣ Selection of materials – choose based on crop requirement.
2️⃣ Mixing – blend components in the right ratio (e.g., 2 parts loamy soil + 1 part sand + 1 part compost).
3️⃣ Sterilization – heat/steam/solarize to kill pathogens and weeds.
4️⃣ Conditioning – moisten and allow medium to stabilize for a few days.
5️⃣ Packing – fill pots, seed trays, or polybags with the prepared medium.

3. Qualities of a Good Growing Medium

✨ Light in weight but firm.
✨ Free from pests, diseases, and weeds.
✨ Good drainage yet retains enough moisture.
✨ pH around 5.5 – 6.8 (slightly acidic to neutral).

📌 Example: For nursery seedlings, a common mix is:
👉 2 parts loam soil + 1 part river sand + 1 part compost (well-decomposed manure).
