🧠 FORENSIC CASE STUDY: THE ST. VALENTINE’S DAY MASSACRE (1929, USA)

On February 14, 1929, Chicago witnessed one of the most brutal crimes in history. Seven members of a rival gang were lined up against a wall and gunned down with Thompson submachine guns — the infamous “Tommy Guns.”

No witnesses survived. No one saw the shooters’ faces. The streets were ruled by gangsters, and Al Capone, America’s most feared mob boss, was the main suspect — but there was no proof.

Then came forensic ballistics — a new and revolutionary field at the time.

Investigators recovered bullets and cartridge cases from the crime scene and compared them under a microscope with test bullets fired from guns found in a suspect’s possession. The unique striations (markings) on the bullets matched perfectly.

This was the first major case in which ballistic comparison helped link specific guns to a mass murder.

Although Capone was never convicted for the massacre itself, the forensic evidence proved the power of ballistics in criminal justice.
