BRAND STORY
EPISODE 4 — The Moment Teaching Became More Than a Job

There was a point when I realised I wasn't just teaching subjects. I was changing how children saw themselves.

I have a client whose daughter wanted to prepare for entrance examination. Her mother already informed me that she would be writing 3 entrance examination and from there she would choose the best.

It was an interesting moment for me because in as much as I understood that my student would need to take responsibility, ensuring she reads and be diligent, I knew that I would still play some role.

So, with my experience in preparing other students for examination, we solved specific questions. I gave her lots of exercises to do especially in mathematics, and general paper.

There were times she would feel exhausted but we just needed to keep going because we had a lot ahead of us.

Within me, I also prayed for the spirit of excellence for my students because I knew what each of us have contributed towards the preparation for each examination.

Then, she took all the examination and PASSED everything. She got the BEST school that will give her a world class education here in Kano, and I was so happy. My student told me that she didn't knew she could do all of these.

It was a long ride to that point of excellence and I was grateful to God that all the efforts were not in vain.

At that point, it was not a question of teaching for teaching sake, I started seeing myself as a change agent.

It's always humbling seeing the changes that happens in the lives of these students and I am always glad to be part of that story.

This is what I also intend to achieve with this brand. We will not just solve mathematics. I will be that responsible and highly disciplined study guardian that will hold you by the hand till excellence is attained.

Stay connected as we continue.

MATHEMATICS IS FOR INTELLIGENT PEOPLE

I know you must be curious and probably want to share your opinion.
I feel the same too because most times, when we classify people based on their intellectual abilities, we tend to do so from this lens especially in terms of academics.

Now, does it mean that if you don't do well in mathematics, you are not intelligent. No. However, instead of just saying this, can we ask ourselves, " what made those that love mathematics love it and understand it?"

They have found one of the rules of mathematics which is understanding. Not just mere understanding of a and b but a systematic step-by-step revelation of the operations at each level.

When a student have this level of understanding of mathematics at his/her level, the student will develop the curiosity to go deeper into it. This can be in terms of solving 50-100 questions on one topic, consulting senior ones, researching and gaining more insights. This opens the mind of the students towards a better appreciation of mathematics.

The same thing applies to the teaching of mathematics, you don't just focus on those that have been following your lesson, you have to ensure that everyone follows. Give them class work e.g. Open book test, group test, quiz etc. Assess them at each topic so that by the end of the lesson, they will have better understanding of the subject.

Mathematics is for everyone.
We just have to understand it.
We just have to be able to know what the number is saying.

That is why in my class " FRACTION MADE EASY FOR PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL", I made it so easy for students to understand everything in the course which assignments for every topic taught.

LCM( LOWEST COMMON MULTIPLE) IN FRACTION

Most students think that fraction ends in just proper fraction, improper fraction, and mixed fraction. No.
Some even think that it ends in reduction to lowest terms.
No.

It's beyond that. We have what we call ' Basic Operations' in fractions.
When it comes to that, we do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It even extend to word problem.

It didn't stop there o.
While doing addition and subtraction, you understand that something happens to the denominator.

We have two cases

Case 1
When the denominator is the same.

Case 2
When the denominator is different.

Each of them serve different purpose and are solved differently.

However, one similarity between them is finding the LCM.

This is a non-negotiable factor in solving fraction questions because it'll definitely play a vital role in the answer to the questions.

That's why in our course ' FRACTION MADE EASY FOR PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ' we have a session where we broke this done to the extent that any student will understand.

MAYBE THE TEACHING METHOD IS THE PROBLEM

Every subject is unique in its own way. It means that to even teach them require certain skills that will enable the learner to understand.

Some subjects require just reading, and writing and you get everything immediately.
Some have it as a MUST that you will write, and solve different calculations.

Some subjects require that you don't just read and write, you think through it, understanding what happened at each point. Immediately you don't understand any step, the next step may be challenging.

That's why in our current class, " FRACTION MADE EASY FOR PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL", my focus was to get students to understand every topic discussed there. There are assessments at the end of each topic to ensure you are following. The explanations were very simple in such a way that the slowest learner can easily understand everything without worry.

HERE'S WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL LEARN:
‎
‎Class 1— Meaning of Fraction and types of fractions
‎Class 2 — Conversion from Improper Fraction to Mixed Fraction
‎Class 3 — Conversion from Mixed Fraction to Improper Fraction
‎Class 4 — Equivalent Fraction
‎Class 5 — Lowest Term in Fraction
‎Class 6 — Addition and Subtraction of Fraction
‎Class 7— Multiplication and Division of Fraction

🚨 WHY IS YOUR CHILD STILL STRUGGLING WITH FRACTIONS?

Sometimes, the problem isn't that your child is “bad at Mathematics.”

The problem may be that fractions were never properly broken down for them.

A child may struggle because they:

❌ Memorise rules without understanding them
❌ Have a weak foundation in fractions
❌ Struggle with basic multiplication and division
❌ Don't understand when or why to use LCM
❌ Rush through questions and make avoidable mistakes
❌ Don't get enough practice

And when these gaps are not addressed early, fractions can continue to become more difficult as the child progresses.

But fractions don't have to be scary. 🧮

When they are taught in small, simple, bite-sized steps, children can gradually understand what they are doing instead of simply memorising formulas.

That's why I created FRACTION MADE EASY FOR PRIMARY AND JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS.

FIVE PRINCIPLES OF EXTRAORDINARY MATHEMATICS TEACHING

I am a certified teacher registered with Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. My background in teaching has helped me a lot in accessing certain knowledge on how to teach.

There's a HOW TO on everything. Even in teaching, all subjects has a HOW TO. So, for sciences especially mathematics, it can involve different methods.

I was watching this TED TALK on Sunday and I learnt a lot from it. It talked about how mathematics teachers can be able to make maths engaging thereby promoting mathematical thinking.

The power of mathematics in today's world cannot be overemphasize. It's application in different areas of life has produced diverse results ranging from groundbreaking discoveries to inventions etc.

However, it takes great determination, curiosity and a mind that's ready to learn.

These things can be instilled into the lives of students, and that's where this TED talk got more interesting.

As a teacher, it's shaped how to see mathematics and validated my believe that most times answers may not be where the transformation starts but the journey to getting it.

In this journey, teacher is the driver, and he/she must be well equipped.
