Professor Adamu Baikie was one of Nigeria’s most respected educationists and academic leaders. Born on 2 October 1931 in Wusasa, Zaria, Kaduna State, he dedicated his life to knowledge, leadership, and the development of education in Nigeria and Africa.
He attended schools in Kano, Lokoja, and Wusasa before furthering his education abroad. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of London and later obtained a PhD in Education from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1968.
In 1971, he became the first Professor of Education from Northern Nigeria, making history through hard work and excellence. He served at Ahmadu Bello University as a lecturer, Dean of the Faculty of Education, and Director of the Institute of Education.
Professor Baikie also held major leadership positions, including: • Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin
• Vice Chancellor of the National University of Lesotho
• Pioneer Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University
He was known for wisdom, discipline, humility, and dedication to students and national development. His impact on education inspired generations of scholars and leaders across Nigeria.
Professor Adamu Baikie passed away in 2025 at the age of 94, leaving behind a powerful legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
