Class Project - The rich and beautiful culture of the Fulbe people displayed by the Grade One pupils

My Marketing Manager job with an IT company came with presentations, lots of them and persuasive ones at that. I expressed myself confidently amongst peers but little did I know that the fear of public speaking was concealed somewhere beneath all that confidence.

I was to market a software we had then launched for schools. The words I knew so well vanished. I was mortified. What a marketing manager I thought in my head. Truth be told it was more than just being a marketing manager. I had enormous dreams that could only be achieved with a more professional level of competence and confidence.

Then one afternoon I was on a call with Yusuf Funtua a toastmaster from Katsina City TMC and he asked if I'd heard about toastmasters. He gave me the contact of Kano TMC and encouraged me to attend a meeting. Though a little skeptical but I made the call.

On a Sunday afternoon in August 2017 I attended a meeting. I watched keenly and was in awe of the level of professionalism displayed. The atmosphere was receptive and highly educative. For my moment of truth I participated during the table topics. I registered a couple of months later and the rest they say is history.

Being a toastmasters has made me a better at speaking and leading. It helped me understand and discover skills I never knew I had. It opened doors of opportunities I never thought were possible. That year I chaired and organised the first Youth Summit in Nigeria for my state, started an education consultancy company, a personal day care and delivered one of the best speeches my club has ever heard.

Unsuccessful people make decisions based on their current situation but successful people make decision based on where they want to be. Becoming a Toastmaster was my decision to be successful.
