INNOCENCE ON TRIAL
Episode 11:
Cracks in the Testimony
The courtroom buzzed with anticipation as Barrister Emeka rose to cross-examine the prosecution’s key witness, Mr. Okoro. Chinelo’s palms were sweaty; she gripped the edge of the bench, trying to steady her nerves.
Emeka’s voice was calm but firm. “Mr. Okoro, you testified that you saw Chinelo at the scene at exactly 9:30 pm. Is that correct?”
“Yes, that’s right,” Okoro replied confidently.
“But isn’t it true,” Emeka pressed, “that you told the police earlier that it was closer to 10 pm when you arrived?”
The witness hesitated, eyes darting nervously. “Well… I might have been mistaken.”
Emeka seized the moment. “Which is it, sir? 9:30 pm or 10 pm? Your statement must be precise.”
Okoro struggled to answer, his earlier certainty fading.
Outside the courtroom, the tension was palpable. Reporters jostled for space, whispering about the witness’s wavering credibility. Chinelo’s friends exchanged hopeful glances, sensing that the truth was beginning to surface.
When the judge called for a recess, Chinelo stepped out into the fresh air, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks. Emeka approached and whispered, “We’re making progress. Stay strong.”
For the first time since the ordeal began, Chinelo dared to believe that just might be within reach.
