INQUIRE vs ENQUIRE?

"Sir Amos, what's the difference between the two words?"

First, both words are commonly used interchangeably, as they generally mean to ASK/SEEK/FIND OUT.

However, it's been observed that Americans prefer the use of INQUIRE while in British English, ENQUIRE is used.

What's more is that in strict contextual usage, INQUIRE is often used when it has to do with investigation while ENQUIRE is used when asking or trying to find out about something.

For examples:

1. The police carried out an inquiry into the case of murder. ✔️

2. I need to enquire whether my mother called her or not.✔️

Mark you, both words would still be correct when used interchangeably in modern English.
