Chinua Achebe Dropped Out of Medicine — and Still Stands Tall
Chinua Achebe was once a medical student.
That fact alone unsettles many people, especially in Nigeria where medicine is treated as destiny, not a choice. Achebe gained admission to study medicine at University College, Ibadan. He had the grades. He had the prestige. He had what society called a “bright future.”
But he left.
Not because he was lazy.
Not because he failed.
Not because he couldn’t cope.
He left because medicine was not his calling.
Today, Achebe is not remembered as “the man who quit medicine.”
He is remembered as the man who gave Africa its literary voice.
The Lie We Tell Young People
In Nigeria, once your JAMB score is high, the conclusion is automatic:
“You must study Medicine.”
No conversation.
No questions about temperament.
No discussion about passion.
No regard for personality.
Just pressure.
Parents boast.
Relatives celebrate.
Church members announce it.
And the student quietly enters a life they may not be built for.
Medicine becomes a status symbol, not a vocation.
Medicine Is Not Just Intelligence — It Is Humanity
Medicine is not for people who only love success.
It is for people who can carry human suffering daily.
You will see:
• Pain that does not end
• Death that makes no sense
• Patients who cannot pay
• Systems that frustrate your values
• Ethical dilemmas that drain your soul
If you do not have deep patience for human beings, medicine will slowly break you — even if you are brilliant.
Many doctors don’t burn out because they are weak.
They burn out because they never wanted this life in the first place.
Achebe’s Courage Was Not Dropping Out — It Was Honesty
Dropping medicine in Nigeria is seen as failure.
But Achebe did something harder:
He told the truth about himself.
He chose uncertainty over pretense.
He chose passion over applause.
He chose purpose over pressure.
So please be wise in making your choice as a student.
