This marked the successful conclusion of our Two-Week Short Course in Postharvest Management of Fresh Produce at the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of Jos.
During the programme, participants were divided into groups where they worked together to develop business plans and practical strategies for applying the knowledge gained throughout the training. Each group presented their ideas and future plans on how they intend to implement improved postharvest management practices and create value within the agricultural sector.
The event also featured the presentation of certificates to all participants in recognition of their dedication and successful completion of the course.
We are proud of the enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment demonstrated by the participants throughout the training.

The Short Course on Post-Harvest Management of Fresh Produce continued with a practical field excursion to (EcoFarms and Agro Services Limited).
The visit provided participants with first-hand exposure to real-world agricultural operations, post-harvest handling systems, and value chain integration beyond the classroom environment.
During the excursion, participants:
• Observed practical post-harvest handling techniques
• Examined storage and processing practices
• Engaged with industry professionals
• Connected theoretical knowledge with commercial agricultural realities
The field trip reinforced the importance of linking academic training with industry practice, ensuring that participants leave not only with knowledge, but with practical insight and professional perspective.
This final activity underscored the Centre’s commitment to experiential learning and industry-driven capacity building.

Day Four of the Short Course on Post-Harvest Management of Fresh Produce at the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security University of Jos, was highly practical and innovation-focused.
The day began with a recap session led by Mrs. Ritkatmun Lenka Bwemana, reinforcing previous lessons and preparing participants for advanced applications.
Participants then engaged in:
• Module 6: Quality Control and Food Safety – Dr. Sisunya Habila
• Practical hands-on demonstrations and group presentations
The sessions emphasized maintaining standards, reducing contamination risks, and ensuring that fresh produce meets food safety requirements.
In the afternoon, attention shifted to:
• Module 7: Value Addition and Entrepreneurship – Mrs. Ritkatmun Lenka Bwemana & Dr. Kyenpiya Deshi
This session moved beyond theory into real-life processing and packaging techniques.
Participants were practically trained on how to:
• Convert fresh strawberries into jam
• Process fresh produce into value-added products
• Properly package vegetables to retain freshness and improve marketability
The class demonstrated how post-harvest management extends beyond preservation into product transformation, branding, and profitability.
Day Four reinforced that food security is not just about production... it is about quality, value addition, market readiness, and entrepreneurship.

Day Two of the Short Course on Post-Harvest Management of Fresh Produce at the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of Jos, was both technically engaging and strategically significant.
The day began with a structured recap of Monday’s sessions, reinforcing key lessons and participant reflections before moving into deeper technical modules.
Participants advanced into:
• Module 2: Harvesting and Field Handling – Dr. Kyenpiya Deshi
• Practical hands-on sessions and group presentations
• Module 3: Packhouse Operations – Dr. Daure
• Interactive discussions and applied practical exercises
The sessions were highly participatory, with strong team collaboration and practical demonstrations translating theory into real-world post-harvest management solutions.
A defining highlight of the day was the official Monitoring and Evaluation visit by a five-member delegation from the TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) Directorate (Research and Development / Centres of Excellence).
The NRF team engaged directly with course participants, observed live practical sessions, toured facilities, and held extensive discussions with Centre leadership on programme implementation, operational constraints, innovation pathways, and institutional performance.
Of particular note was the recognition of the Centre’s transformation under its recent leadership transition. Within just 10 months, significant and visible progress has been recorded in facility organization, programme ex*****on, innovation, and strategic collaborations.
The delegation described the visit as promising, acknowledging the firm and measurable trajectory of growth at the Centre.
Their engagement reinforced not only accountability and oversight but also confidence in the Centre’s evolving impact in research, training, and food systems development.
Day Two therefore reaffirmed that this programme is not merely theoretical. It is structured, practical, innovative, and aligned with measurable institutional progress.

The TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of Jos, had the honour of hosting a five-member delegation from the TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) Directorate for an official Evaluation visit.
The delegation, comprising Professors and senior evaluators, visited the Centre to assess institutional progress, programme implementation, and overall performance.
The engagement featured extensive discussions on:
• Implementation milestones
• Operational constraints
• Unachieved targets and improvement pathways
• Institutional restructuring and strategic direction
A key focus of the visit was the Centre’s progress under its recent leadership transition. Within just 10 months of change in leadership, the Centre has recorded significant visible transformation.
The discussions were transparent, forward-looking, and highly constructive.

As part of their Evaluation visit to the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of Jos, the delegation of evaluators from the TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) Directorate (Research and Development/ Centres of Excellence) paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos.
Although the Vice Chancellor was unavoidably away, attending a National assignment, he was ably represented by the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Dakul, who received the delegation on behalf of the university leadership.
The meeting was engaging and insightful, featuring strategic discussions on:
• The performance and progress of the Centre
• Institutional support mechanisms
• Research development priorities
• Sustainability and long-term impact
The interaction reaffirmed the University of Jos’ strong commitment to supporting the Centre’s mandate as a TETFund Centre of Excellence.
The visit further strengthened collaboration between the TETFund Directorate (Research & Development / Centres of Excellence) and university leadership, reinforcing shared accountability and a collective drive toward sustained institutional excellence.

The TETFund Centre of Excellence in Food Security, University of Jos, officially launched its Short Course on Post-Harvest Management of Fresh Produce today, and it was nothing short of impactful!
From the opening ceremony to the technical sessions, the atmosphere was energetic and inspiring.
After welcome remarks and goodwill messages from our distinguished leadership, participants dove straight into engaging presentations on:

• Introduction to Post-Harvest Management
But it didn’t stop there.
We had practical sessions! 👏🏽
Participants were grouped into teams and given hands-on activities to apply what they had just learned. The room came alive with discussion, collaboration, laughter, and serious problem-solving.
