๐Ÿ–Š๏ธNational Strike overshadowed national protest in Nigeria: strike has proven track record of achieving results

H. Lamido
08.07.2024

In Nigeria, the quest for change and accountability has led citizens to explore various forms of civil action. While protests and strikes are both essential tools, the latter has consistently demonstrated a proven track record of achieving tangible results. As we navigate the complexities of advocacy in Nigeria, it's crucial to recognize the superiority of national strikes over national protests.

Nigeria's history is replete with examples of successful strikes that have brought about significant reforms. The 1993 strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) led to the reversal of the controvers
Similarly, the 2012 strike against fuel subsidy removal forced the government to reinstate the subsidy. These victories demonstrate the efficacy of strikes in achieving concrete results.

In contrast, protests in Nigeria have often been met with violence and repression, resulting in minimal impact. The protests, for instance, were brutally suppressed, highlighting the limitations of protests in achieving lasting change.
Strikes, on the other hand, have a unique ability to halt economic activities, exerting significant pressure on the government to address the demands of the people. This targeted approach has proven effective in Nigeria's labor disputes and political reforms.

Furthermore, strikes in Nigeria enjoy a level of legal protection, providing a safeguard for participants. This protection encourages greater participation and reinforces the strike's impact.
In conclusion, as Nigerians seek to effect meaningful change, it's essential to recognize the superiority of national strikes over national protests. With their proven track record, inclusivity, and focus, strikes offer a more effective and sustainable means of achieving results. As we move forward, let us harness the power of strikes to shape a brighter future for Nigeria.
