Children become great communicators when given opportunities to speak, listen, ask questions, and be heard.

SIMPLE WAYS TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNICATORS

1. Ask Open-ended questions: Instead of "Did you enjoy school?" try asking, "What was the most interesting thing you learned in school today and why?" This type of question encourages children to explain, reflect, and express their ideas.

2. Give them time to think before answering: Don't rush to complete their sentences or give them the answer. A few extra seconds can give a child the confidence and space to organise their thoughts.

3. Let them play, pretend, and create: Playing among themselves or with parents gives children opportunities to practise conversation, cooperation, body language, and expressing ideas.

4. Listen to them: Put down the phone and any form of distraction and give them your attention. Children learn to listen by experiencing what it feels like to be listened to.

5. Read and tell stories together.

In a world where ideas travel in seconds, knowing something is no longer enough.

Children must also learn how to express ideas clearly, listen to others, and understand different perspectives.

That is why Communication is one of the essential Future-Ready Skills every child needs.

What does future-ready communication mean?

It goes beyond speaking confidently.

It means helping children learn to:

👂 Active Listening: understand what others are saying before responding.

💡 Express ideas clearly: communicate their thoughts in ways others can understand.

🤝 Communicate with empathy: understand different perspectives and express disagreement respectfully.

💻 Communicate digitally: use chats, email, video, social media, and other digital tools responsibly and effectively.

👀 Read non-verbal cues: understand that communication also happens through facial expressions, body language, tone, and gestures.

Why does it matter?

Because the future will require children who can collaborate, share ideas, solve problems, build relationships, and confidently present their solutions.

What if the next big solution starts with a child asking, “What if we tried it differently?”

The world is changing rapidly, and education must evolve with it.

Preparing children for the future is no longer just about helping them remember information. It is about helping them imagine possibilities, explore ideas, create, and find new solutions to problems.

🎨 Creativity helps children imagine what could be.

🚀 Innovation helps them turn those ideas into solutions.

Why do they matter?

🔹 Children learn to approach challenges from different angles.

🔹 Children become more comfortable trying new approaches when the first one doesn't work.

🔹Creating and experimenting teaches children that mistakes are part of learning, not the end of it.

🔹 As Ai and automation take over more routine tasks, uniquely human abilities such as imagination, judgment, collaboration, and creative problem-solving become increasingly valuable.

How can we nurture creativity?

🔹Ask "Why?" and "What if?" Give children opportunities to question and explore.

At Godwill Duutle Educational Foundation -GDEF, we believe continuous training and upskilling are essential not only for individual growth, but for building an organization capable of creating lasting impact.

We were represented at the Generation Next Conference, with the theme: "Building a Future-Ready Educational System for National Growth and Development".

The conference brought together policymakers, educators, education stakeholders, technology experts, innovators, changemakers, youth development mentors, and teachers.

The conversations explored the role of technology, innovation, and collaboration in building a future-ready education system, with key sessions on:

AI & the Ethical Use of AI in Education
Social Media for Educators
Google Workspace for Education and practical ways educators can integrate these tools into their daily work.

The discussions were rich and practical, with educators actively participating, asking insightful questions, and exploring how technology can improve teaching and learning.

For us at Godwill Duutle Educational Foundation -GDEF, we are taking these lessons back to our work, particularly our efforts to support teachers in rural communities to gradually embrace technology and AI as tools for better teaching, learning, creativity, and problem-solving.

In a world where information is everywhere, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the ability to think critically.

Critical thinking is the ability to question, analyze, evaluate information, and make sound decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.

How can we nurture critical thinkers?

✅ Welcome questions, even the difficult ones.
✅ Praise their thinking process, not just the correct answer.
✅ Encourage play and exploration; children learn by discovering.
✅ Teach children to look for evidence before believing or sharing information.
✅ Allow safe mistakes, they're powerful opportunities for learning and growth.
✅ Ask open-ended questions like, "Why do you think that?" or "How would you solve it?"

What can hinder critical thinking?

❌ Ignoring or dismissing their opinions and ideas.
❌ Discouraging or punishing children for asking questions.

"No child is a blank slate; every child has something to contribute"

That was one of the most powerful lessons Luka Philemon of LEA Tazuk Primary School took away from our STEM 3.0 Teachers' Training.

For Luka, the training was a timely reminder that education must evolve. Teaching is no longer just about delivering lessons; it's about creating opportunities for every child to think, explore, and solve problems.

Every child has something to offer. Every child can learn. Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.
