From Scholar to Leader — Meet Our Vice Chancellor

Ibrahim Mohammed Sule is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Born in Kontagora, the headquarters of Kontagora Local Government in Niger State, on the 23rd September 1966. Prof. Sule obtained the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) from Rimaye Primary School-Kontagora in 1979, West Africa School Certificate Examination (WASCE) from Government Science College Kagara in 1984.

He obtained the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMB) certificate from School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1985, B. Pharm from Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1989, M.Sc. (Pharmaceutical Chemistry) and PhD(Pharmaceutical Chemistry) in 1999 and 2003 respectively, from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

Prof. Sule began his career as an Intern Pharmacist with Niger State Ministry of Health in 1989 and rose to the rank of Senior Pharmacist in the same ministry.
He joined the service of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in February 1997 as an Assistant Lecturer, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry. He rose through the ranks and became a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 2011.

He held several academic and administrative positions, some of which are: Head, Pharmacy Department, General Hospital Kagara, Niger State in 1992 - 1993, Quality Control Manager, Niger State Infusion Plant, Minna - Niger State, 1993-1994. Head, Pharmacy Department, General Hospital Tungan Magajiya, Niger State, 1993- 1997, Head, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, 2006 - 2010, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria-2007 - 2011, Deputy Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria - Dec. 2012-Dec. 2013, Ag. Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Ahmadu BelloUniversity, Zaria-Dec. 2013 to Feb. 2014 and Director, Directorate of Academic Planning and Monitoring, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Feb. 2014-Feb. 2018.

He was at Gombe State University for a one-year sabbatical leave appointment (June 2018 - May 2019). While on sabbatical, he was Head, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Gombe State University-July, 2018-May, 2019 and Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Gombe State University, Jan. 2018-May 2019.

On his return to the University, Prof. Sule was appointed Director, Distance Learning Centre, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from May, 2020 to July 2024 and now is the Vice Chancellor Mercy Medical University Iwara, Iwo Osun State from 1st July 2025 to date.

Prof. Sule is a member of several professional bodies, among which are: Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Nigeria Association Pharmacist in Academia (NAPA) and was a member of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN). In his academic journey, Professor Sule had supervised many undergraduate project, forty-one (41) M.Sc. theses (as major and minor supervisor) and twenty-two (22) PhD dissertations (as major and minor supervisor). He has published in over seventy (70) local and international journals (as major and minor author).

MERCY MEDICAL UNIVERSITY HOLDS ORIENTATION CEREMONY FOR 2026/2027 FRESH STUDENTS

The university today warmly welcomed its newest students at the official orientation ceremony for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Registrar, Mr. Olalekan Adiat, delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muhammed Ibrahim Sule. He warmly received the fresh students and charged them to maintain good conduct and exemplary behaviour for a seamless academic journey.

In attendance were the Registrar, Mr. Olalekan Adiat, Dean of Student Affairs Mrs. Balikis Durojaye, Ag. Dean of Basic Studies and General Studies, Mr. Olaniran Sikiru Adesina, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Olufemi Alamu, Dean of Nursing Science, Nurse Nurudeen Olawale Adeniyi, Representatives of the Dean of Medical Laboratory Science, Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Hospital Management, HOD of Community Health and Members of the University staff.

Mrs. Balikis Durojaye, Dean of Student Affairs, guided the students through the campus environment and facilities, clearly outlining where and how to access academic and student support services.

Professor Olufemi Alamu, Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, welcomed students under his faculty and emphasized the need for academic readiness, a clear understanding of the learning mode, and the duration of their programmes.

The representative of the Dean of Medical Laboratory Science encouraged academic resilience and highlighted the requirements for success as well as the rewarding career prospects in the profession.

Nurse Nurudeen Adeniyi, Dean of Nursing Science, urged the students to remain academically prepared and focused on building a strong CGPA, noting that a low CGPA could jeopardize their progress. He also outlined the academic pathway and professional examinations required to become a certified nurse.

Representatives of the Provost, College of Pharmacy, the Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences and Hospital Management, and the HOD of Community Health also addressed students from their respective faculties and departments, preparing them for the academic journey ahead and the professional world beyond.

In his closing remarks, the Registrar implored the fresh students to take their studies seriously, actualize their dreams, and strive to become outstanding future healthcare professionals on the global stage.

The ceremony concluded on a lively note with an interactive session where students asked thoughtful questions and received clear, insightful responses from the Registrar.

MDCN GRANTS FULL HOUSEMANSHIP ACCREDITATION AND QUOTA INCREASE TO MERCY MEDICAL UNIVERSITY AFTER TWO-DAY VISIT

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted Mercy Medical University full accreditation for its housemanship programme, along with an increase in its training quota, following a successful two-day accreditation visit held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The MDCN team, led by the Council’s Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, conducted a comprehensive assessment of the university’s facilities and readiness. Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly received by the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), the Provost, and other principal officers of the institution.

During the exercise, the team inspected all required facilities for accreditation. These included Mercy University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo and Mercy University Teaching Hospital at the Telemu Campus, among other academic and clinical infrastructure.

Having certified the university’s readiness and competency in meeting the required standards, the MDCN team approved full accreditation for housemanship training and an upward review of the institution’s quota. The development marks a significant milestone for Mercy Medical University in its commitment to producing well-trained medical professionals.
