SIGN-OUT LETTER: CALL TO END THE SHAMEFUL “SIGN-OUT” PRACTICE IN ALL STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS
To: All State Government, Educational Stakeholders, and School Owners
I, Sir Abdallah, write this letter out of deep concern for the growing trend known as “Sign-Out” in many secondary schools across all States during final examinations like NECO and WAEC.
This practice, which should ideally mark the end of a student's academic journey with dignity and reflection, has now become a scene of indiscipline, immorality, and chaos—a complete departure from the values our schools and communities are meant to uphold.
What “Sign-Out” Has Become:
On this day, many students:
Deface or destroy their school uniforms, write offensive messages on them, and pour substances like powder, paint spray, or even harmful liquids on themselves and others.
Roam the streets and school premises disorderly, creating public disturbances and in some cases, engaging in violent behavior.
Disrespect teachers and school authorities, violating school rules with impunity.
Harass female students who refuse to join, forcing them to participate against their will pouring substances on them, writing on their bodies, and humiliating them in public.
Now the students are gradually moving to unknown destinations, gathering themselves for activities that are not in line with our morals or values.
This is not a celebration. It is bullying, abuse, and a stain on our education system.
Why the Current “Sign-Out” Trend Must Be Stopped:
1. It Violates Our Cultural Values
Our culture is rooted in dignity, modesty, and respect. This shameful conduct under the label of “signing out” undermines those values.
2. It Goes Against Religious Teachings
Neither Islam nor Christianity encourages indecency, harassment, or the destruction of property. These acts are not forms of joy they are violations.
3. It Harms the Very Students It Is Meant to Celebrate
Instead of marking the end of schooling with grace, students especially girls are being abused and humiliated. The guilty grow in lawlessness, while the innocent suffer.
My Sign-Out Appeal:
TO ALL STATE GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA:
Follow Yobe State's commendable example: ban the current form of Sign-Out celebrations across all public and private schools.
Sanction any school that permits such conduct, and ensure school authorities are held accountable.
Make it clear that education is for character-building, not public disgrace.
TO SCHOOL OWNERS AND STAKEHOLDERS:
Take a firm stand. Ban reckless Sign-Out activities in your schools.
Provide safe, meaningful, and supervised alternatives to mark the end of the school year.
Protect students from abuse, and restore discipline and order in your school environment.
TO TEACHERS:
Use your position to speak out. Teach students that success is celebrated through achievement and responsibility, not through destruction or disorder.
Condemn any form of abuse or disrespect happening in the name of celebration.
TO PARENTS:
Pay close attention to your children’s activities during and after exams.
Do not give money or buy materials that support shameful Sign-Out behaviors.
Teach your children to celebrate with honor, gratitude, and the fear of God.
TO STUDENTS:
Respect yourselves, your classmates, and your uniforms. Do not join the crowd in disrespectful behavior.
Do not force others to participate. That is bullying, and it’s wrong.
Let your academic results speak for you, not powder, torn clothes, Paint Spray or street noise.
As I sign out, I call on all of us government, schools, parents, and students to rise against this destructive trend. Let us protect the image of our schools and the moral health of our youth.
Let us restore dignity to the idea of "signing out"with discipline, peace, and pride.
This shameful version of Sign-Out must stop, now and forever.
