Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, Nigeria | April 2026
In line with its strategic priority on digital transformation, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has announced the launch of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation (IFSI), a new interdisciplinary academic and innovation hub designed to prepare students and professionals for emerging sectors of the global digital economy.
The launch reflects AE-FUNAIโs broader commitment to technology-enabled education, innovative programme development, and the preparation of graduates for a rapidly evolving world of work. The universityโs strategic plan identifies digital transformation as a major institutional priority and positions technology as a key enabler of academic excellence, research, administration, and student learning.
The institute is being developed in partnership with the African Skills and Innovation Network (ASIN), an interdisciplinary network advancing digital learning, innovation ecosystems, and future skills development across Africa.
IFSI will focus on high-impact areas including artificial intelligence, data science, financial technology, cybersecurity, digital governance, entrepreneurship, and agritech. It is designed to combine academic programmes, applied research, and professional training to equip learners with the knowledge, practical skills, and innovative mindset needed in rapidly evolving technology-driven industries.
The institute will operate through a modern digital-first learning model supported by an advanced Learning Management System and global faculty collaboration. Through this approach, students will engage with instructors, researchers, and industry experts from across Nigeria and around the world.
According to the Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, the establishment of the institute reflects the universityโs commitment to preparing students for the realities of the modern global economy.
โThe world of work is changing at an unprecedented pace, and universities must evolve to prepare graduates for new industries driven by digital technologies and innovation,โ said Professor Nwachukwu. โThe Institute for Future Skills and Innovation positions AE-FUNAI to equip students with the skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset required to lead in the digital economy.โ
The institute will initially launch flagship undergraduate programmes, including:
โข BSc Artificial Intelligence and Applied Data Science
โข BSc Financial Technology and Digital Banking
โข BSc Applied Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics
โข BSc Digital Business and Innovation
โข BSc Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology
โข BSc Digital Product Design and Emerging Technologies
โข BSc Smart Agriculture, Agritech and Rural Innovation
These programmes will be delivered through a blended, online-first model that combines digital lectures, collaborative learning platforms, and real-world innovation projects with periodic in-person activities such as workshops, innovation labs, and capstone demonstrations. Additional undergraduate, postgraduate, professional, and executive offerings will be introduced progressively across the instituteโs six academic pathways.
A key feature of the institute is its distributed faculty model, which will bring together leading academics and industry practitioners from Nigeria and internationally. This model enables AE-FUNAI to leverage global expertise while expanding access to high-quality learning.
The institute will operate through six interdisciplinary academic pathways, each representing a strategic domain within the emerging digital and innovation-driven economy:
โข Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems
โข Digital Economy and FinTech
โข Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Leadership
โข Digital Governance and Cyber Systems
โข Human-Centered Digital Technology
โข Sustainable Systems, Agritech and Rural Innovation
Beyond academic degrees, the institute will also offer professional certificate programmes, executive education, apprenticeships, and corporate training to support workforce development across industries.
According to Professor Chinedu Ekuma, Executive Director of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation, the institute is designed to expand access to future-focused education while connecting learning to real-world impact.
โOur vision is to build one of Africaโs leading centres for future skills, interdisciplinary technology education, and innovation,โ said Professor Ekuma. โBy bringing together global faculty, industry practitioners, and innovation networks, the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation is designed to prepare learners not only to study emerging technologies, but to apply them across artificial intelligence, digital finance, entrepreneurship, cyber and governance systems, human-centered design, and sustainable agritech and rural innovation.โ
Professor Ekuma added that the instituteโs model places strong emphasis on applied learning and innovation.
โStudents in the institute will not only study technology. They will build solutions, launch ventures, and collaborate on interdisciplinary innovation projects that address some of the most pressing challenges facing Africa and the global economy,โ he said.
Through its partnership with ASIN, the institute will also connect students with a broader ecosystem of researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders.

The establishment of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where demand for advanced digital and interdisciplinary skills continues to grow rapidly. Nigeria is home to one of Africaโs fastest-growing technology ecosystems, with expanding sectors in fintech, artificial intelligence, digital services, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship. At the same time, employers across industries continue to report a shortage of professionals with the advanced technical, entrepreneurial, and interdisciplinary capabilities needed to support this transformation.
By developing future-focused programmes and combining academic learning with applied innovation, AE-FUNAIโs new institute aims to help close this skills gap and strengthen Nigeriaโs capacity to compete in the global knowledge economy.
The launch of IFSI also aligns with AE-FUNAIโs broader institutional vision of becoming a world-class centre of learning and research and a hub for economic transformation through creative and innovative endeavours.
With its emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, industry collaboration, and digital delivery, the institute is expected to strengthen the universityโs position as a forward-looking institution advancing technology-enabled education in Nigeria and across Africa.
โOur goal is simple but transformative,โ added Professor Nwachukwu. โWe want AE-FUNAI graduates to be innovators, technology leaders, and entrepreneurs capable of shaping the future, not just in Nigeria, but globally. Through this institute, AE-FUNAI is creating a platform where innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship converge to shape the future of higher education in Africa.โ
