THE FOUR KINDS OF PEOPLE IN EVERY CHURCH

Church ministry is dynamic. Never think that you own the church or its people. Do not try to be lord over God’s heritage (1 Peter 5:2–3). The Lord alone owns His flock; you are merely a vessel He uses to shepherd His sheep. Forget this, and you will wound what you were sent to heal.

In every assembly you will find four kinds of people:

1. SONS AND DAUGHTERS

These are souls actually born through the gospel you preach (1 Corinthians 4:15). They do not merely “decide to be members” – they are spiritual offspring. When you “cut their hearts,” the gospel you preach flows out. They stay till Jesus comes or death parts you. They do not run after strange voices or interdenominational circuits; they recognise the one voice God gave them (Ephesians 4:11; John 10:4–5).

True sons carry your spiritual DNA (1 Corinthians 11:1). Raise them. Pray for them by name, as Paul prayed for Timothy and the churches (Philippians 1:3–5). A ministry without sons dies when its founder dies. A ministry with sons lives beyond the grave (2 Timothy 2:2).

2. VISITORS

They come for a season, not for life. Most pastors mistake them for sons – do not. Visitors attend one or two Sundays a month, then go “mark their register” elsewhere. No matter how well you treat them, they rarely stay. Do not pour the attention reserved for your sons onto those who are passing through.

Jesus fed the 5,000, but many left when His words became hard (John 6:66). He did not run after them. Celebrate visitors kindly, but invest your primary prayer and teaching time in the children of the house. Discerning shepherds know: do not pastor people who already have pastors.

3. PARASITES

These are spiritual bloodsuckers. They benefit from your gifts – deliverance, breakthroughs, counsel – yet they never help the vision or pay a single bill. They stay, but only to drain. A church of 100 members that cannot pay $50 rent is likely full of parasites, not sons. When the pastor struggles alone, they vanish. When the church closes, they simply move to the next host.

Jude calls such people “hidden reefs” who feed only themselves (Jude 1:12). Paul warned of savage wolves who would not spare the flock (Acts 20:29–30). Parasites will not put their hand to any work; they consume spiritual oxygen and give back nothing. Pray for discernment. Do not waste years trying to pastor those who have never surrendered to be pastored.

4. HELPERS

These are sent by God – often from other churches – to assist you in your early or needy seasons. They admire your zeal and anointing, but they are not your sons. They may give generously, stand with you financially, and then, when their season ends, they quietly leave. Do not try to force helpers to become members. Do not be angry when they go; their time was simply up.

The women who supported Jesus (Luke 8:3) and the Philippians who gave to Paul (Philippians 4:15–18) were helpers. God sends them while your true sons and daughters are still growing financially. When your sons mature and become able to stand with you, the need for helpers often fades. Receive helpers with gratitude, release them without bitterness, and recognise the hand of the Lord in both their coming and their going (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

FINAL WORD TO THE UNDER-SHEPHERD

Raise sons and daughters. Pray for them for hours. Know them by name. Do not chase visitors, do not feed parasites, and do not cling to helpers. Pour your life into the ones God has truly given you. They may be poor today, but the anointing you carry will bless them and make them rich in time.

A ministry that focuses on sons will go far and take territories. It will outlive the founder. That is the ancient path – follow it (Jeremiah 6:16).
