THE STORY BEHIND "THROUGH ALL THE CHANGING SCENES OF LIFE"

The hymn “Through All the Changing Scenes of Life” is rooted in the words of Psalm 34, one of King David’s psalms of thanksgiving and trust. David composed the psalm after escaping from King Achish of Gath, an event recorded in 1 Samuel 21:10–15. In that moment of danger, David pretended to be insane to save his life, and when he was delivered, his heart overflowed with gratitude. Out of that deep relief and renewed faith came the words, “I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Those very words inspired the opening lines of the hymn, reminding believers to praise God through both joy and hardship.

The version of Psalm 34 that became this beloved hymn was written by Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady in the late 17th century. Both men were poets and clergymen who felt that the existing psalms sung in churches were outdated and difficult for congregations to sing. The Sternhold and Hopkins Psalter, which had been used for over a century, was faithful to Scripture but awkward in language and rhythm. In 1696, Tate and Brady published A New Version of the Psalms of David, translating the psalms into smoother, more lyrical English that ordinary people could sing with understanding and joy. Their rendering of Psalm 34 — “Through All the Changing Scenes of Life” — soon became one of the most enduring and cherished hymns from their collection.

The hymn beautifully captures the essence of Psalm 34, expressing unwavering trust in God’s goodness in every circumstance. Its words are both a testimony and an invitation: to bless God in times of trouble as well as in seasons of joy, to take comfort in His deliverance, and to find peace in His constant care. The recurring message is clear — though life changes, God’s love does not. His protection surrounds those who trust Him, and His goodness can be experienced by all who take refuge in Him.

Traditionally sung to the tune “Wiltshire”, the hymn carries a bright and confident melody that mirrors its message of faith and gratitude. Its rhythm encourages joyful singing, turning even a declaration of faith in hardship into an anthem of hope. Over the centuries, it has become a staple of worship across many Christian traditions — Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and beyond — uniting believers in praise across generations.

More than three hundred years after it was first published, “Through All the Changing Scenes of Life” continues to speak powerfully to the human heart. It has been sung at royal ceremonies, thanksgiving services, funerals, and countless Sunday gatherings, always with the same assurance: that God remains constant, even when everything else shifts. In its timeless words, generations have found comfort, courage, and joy — a reminder that through all the changes and seasons of life, the praise of God should never cease, for His faithfulness endures forever.
