THIS IS THE REASON A WATER BOTTLE IS NOT FILLED COMPLETELY WITH WATER.
Normally, when you heat up a substance, the substance expands.
And when you allow it to cool by putting it in a freezer, the substance shrinks (contracts).
Water, when you heat it, it expands.
When you allow it to cool down, it shrinks as well...
Buh immediately it reaches 4°C, na so it starts behaving abnormal. 😭😂
Shebi it is supposed to keep shrinking???
No o!
It starts expanding when it reaches 4°C.
Agbakan! 😹
And guess what?
Even as water continues cooling from 4°C until it freezes, it keeps expanding.
And you know the consequence???
Density = Mass / Volume
Since it expands as it cools below 4°C and eventually freezes, that means it occupies more space (volume).
Oluwa o. 😭😂
And if the mass of the water remains the same while the volume increases, the density decreases.
You know na, since ice is less dense than liquid water, ice will not stay at the bottom.
It floats on water. 🧊
Now, back to the water bottle.
If you fill the bottle completely with water and put it inside the freezer to cool...
When the water reaches 4°C, where it starts expanding abnormally, the extra volume created by the expansion...
Where will it go??? 😭😂
Nowhere.
The bottle is already full.
So as the water keeps expanding, it pushes against the walls of the bottle until the pressure becomes too much.
Na so the bottle go burst.
You’ll just hear:
“GBUMU!” 😂😂😂
So that little space you see at the top of a water bottle?
No be mistake.
Na space for water to expand.
THANK YOU
