"Suicidal Ideation among young people": what the future portends for Nigerian families.

The recent scary Media headlines made by the News of young people commiting su***de in our tertiary institutions is becoming alarming:

A recent survey revealed:

👀The News of a 400-level KWASU student that took her life over poor grades in school;

👀 A 300- level student of Business Administration in UNIZIK that took a bottle of Sniper ending his life over- "Inability to cope with his studies".

👀 A 20-year old student of UNILORIN that ended her life over intense pressure from loan sharks due to an unpaid #500,000 loan she obtained from an online Loan platform;

👀 The unfortunate su***de incident in Federal Polytechnic Mubi - where a student of Mass Communication ingested a poisonous substance after her Boyfriend jilted her...... among several others both documented cases and unreported cases.

And away from our Higher institutions, the most recent awry incident of a young Banker that ended her life over "Life being too hard" still leaves cold shivers running down our Spine.

The one-million naira question is:
"How did we get here?"

We had a Discourse with a brilliant young lady over the weekend and the revelations are quite alarming.

1. Majority of our Parents are out of touch with what is going on in their children's every day lives.

2. Many Families are too busy and pre-occupied with Daily survival affairs to interpret the "Red flags and signals" from their children.

4. Most young people do not have "Reliable go-to Confidants" in the face of serious life pressures or Crisis.

5. Social media is entrenching a culture of "Social Isolation, loneliness and disconnect among families".
