Are you new to the world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or just looking to sharpen your knowledge?

GIS is packed with technical jargon that can sometimes feel overwhelming but don’t worry, l’ve got you covered.

This infographic breaks down 40 of the most common GIS definitions in simple, digestible terms.

From buffers and zonal statistics to remote sensing and spatial analysis, you’ll find the essential lingo to boost your understanding and confidence in GIS.

Whether you’re a student, professional, or just curious about mapping and geospatial data, this is your go-to cheat sheet.

Let’s demystify GIS, one definition at a time!

An orthophoto (orthophotograph) is an aerial image that has been geometrically corrected to remove the effects of camera tilt, terrain relief, and perspective distortion. The result is imagery that is true to scale and suitable for mapping, measurement, and spatial analysis.

From urban planning and infrastructure to agriculture, disaster management, and utility mapping, orthophotos provide reliable spatial information for better GIS workflows and decision-making.

Key benefits:
✅ Accurate distance, area & size measurements
✅ Reduced building lean and terrain displacement
✅ Reliable GIS mapping and analysis
✅ Easy integration with LiDAR, DEMs and vector data

Go through the infographic to understand how orthophotos are created and why they matter.

INSIDE THE ACADEMY 🎬

Episode 1: Cohort D Recap

Cohort D just wrapped their final class. And it was not your regular “sit and listen” session.

Field ops. Practical flights. Real questions, real answers.

We caught up with the tutor and a few trainees to hear how it actually felt to go from theory to controls in hand.

Here’s the recap.

Next up? The final UAV technology cohort of the year. If you’ve been sitting on this decision, this is the last call.

These are one of the most commonly misunderstood concepts in geospatial data processing: DEM, DTM, and DSM.

Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they represent different models of the Earth's surface and serve different engineering and GIS applications.

Understanding when to use each model is essential for producing accurate analyses and making informed decisions in surveying, road design, environmental studies, urban planning, and many other geospatial projects.

"Road design typically relies on DTM because it represents the bare-earth terrain required for accurate engineering analysis. DSM is valuable for identifying obstacles such as buildings and vegetation during planning, while DEM serves as a general elevation model depending on the dataset and application."

Mastering GIS & Remote Sensing starts with
understanding the fundamentals.

Every map tells a story, but the real power lies in the formulas behind the analysis.

From NDVI and SAVI to LST, RMSE, and Kappa Coefficient, these concepts are the foundation of:

✔️Satellite Image Analysis

✔️Spatial Data Science

✔️Land Use/Land Cover Mapping

✔️Environmental Monitoring

✔️Smart Decision-Making

Continuous learning is the key to becoming a better GIS professional.

FROM DRONE STUDENT TO DRONE PILOT!

When Abdullahi Abari started his drone training, he was a student eager to understand the world of drone technology.

Three months later, he has gained valuable industry experience as a Drone Pilot Intern at Geoinfotech.

Through his internship experience, Abdullahi has been able to take what he learned during training and apply it practically.
He has gained more in-depth knowledge of drone applications in GIS and land surveying, while also getting exposure to field operations, flight simulations, technical research, and other practical aspects of the industry.

His journey is a reminder that training can be the beginning, not the end, of your professional journey.

And if you’ve been waiting for a sign to start yours, here it is.

Applications for the final drone training of the year are now open!
