THY WILL BE DONE

Matthew 6: 10
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (KJV)

“Thy will be done” is one of the phrases found in what is popularly known as the Lord’s prayer. The understanding people have about the “will” used in this context is, telling God to do whatever He likes in their life, whether good or bad. Even though under some context it is not wrong to express such desire in prayer, the will of God in our opening text is not about choices and decisions.

Jesus said he came down from heaven, not to do his own will, but the will of him that sent him. And he emphatically said the will of him that sent him is that everyone which seeks him or believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and he will raise him up at the last day. The will of God is therefore salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. The will was done on earth as it was eternally ordained in heaven.

This became possible and available by the death and resurrection of Jesus. The will of God then became fulfilled when Christ resurrected from death. Therefore, to the believer in Christ, that aspect of the Lord’s prayer has been fulfilled in his life except for those not in Christ. To be in Christ is to be in the will of God.

Confession: The availability of salvation through faith in Christ by his death and resurrection is the will of God on earth.

THE KINGDOM HAS COME

Matthew 6: 10
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (KJV)

Our opening text is a phrase found in what is popularly known as the Lord’s prayer. The disciples of Jesus asked him to teach them how to pray as John taught his disciples. Jesus then gave them a form of prayer which is a prophecy of what is yet to take place. It was a prayer fashioned out for people who were about to be transitioned from the law.

The kingdom of God is the rule of Christ in the heart of men. It is not a physical kingdom; it is a spiritual kingdom. Jesus told Nicodemus that unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. therefore, we become members of this kingdom by being born in Christ. To be in Christ is to be in the kingdom of God.

The believer in Christ is therefore not waiting or praying for the kingdom to come. The kingdom has already come. What the elders wished for or expected has been fulfilled by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus from death. It is therefore our responsibility to preach about the kingdom which is Christ Jesus for others to believe and become citizens.

Confession: I am in Christ; therefore, I am in the kingdom of God. I don’t pray thy kingdom come.

PAY ATTENTION TO WORDS

Ephesians 3:3-4
How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ. (KJV)

All of God’s revelation to us is written in words. The first thing to note about the Bible is that it is written in words and human language not heavenly language. That means that you don’t have to go to heaven to understand words of the Bible. The Bible is written by men who used human intelligence to communicate spiritual truths.

So to understand the Bible we must pay attention to words in details. All that Jesus would do concerning his death, burial, resurrection, ascension and glorification were all written before he came, yet the Pharisees and the Sadducees did not see it, so Jesus kept asking them many times if they had not read.

Paul also made it clear that that when we read then we would understand his knowledge in the mystery of Christ. A careful attention to Bible words prevents us from reading the Bible out of context, because with that, you would easily know that same words in many cases do not have same meaning everywhere. Paying attention to Bible words glorifies God because it leads to correct interpretation of his person and character.

Confession: I give myself diligently to the study of bible words, I pay attention to them, because it’s an apostolic instruction to do so.
