DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS/IGBO TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT "NGOSIPUTA OMENAALA IGBO"

The Department of Linguistics/Igbo actively participated in the recently concluded Ngosiputa Omenaala Igbo, an event organized by the Centre of Igbo Language and Culture. The programme was aimed at promoting, preserving, and strengthening the Igbo language, culture, and traditional heritage.

‎The department made a remarkable contribution through a variety of cultural performances these included traditional dance displays, chants, Gwam Gwam Gwam, traditional wrestling, proverb (Ilu) recitations, and speeches highlighting the importance of preserving the Igbo language and identity. Their outstanding performances reflected the richness of Igbo cultural heritage and demonstrated the department's commitment to promoting indigenous values.

‎The event also featured intellectual presentations by distinguished scholars in the field of linguistic/Igbo.
‎Notably, Prof. E. Achebe and Prof. Ikegwuonu delivered inspiring speeches on the need to strengthen and preserve the Igbo language and culture for future generations. Their presentations emphasized the responsibility of scholars, students, traditional institutions, and government agencies in ensuring that the Igbo language continues to flourish.

‎As part of the programme, Prof. Ikegwuonu presided over the presentation of awards to the Commissioner for Tourism and other government officials who have contributed significantly to the promotion of Igbo language and culture. Awards were also presented to selected traditional rulers, including Igwes and other community leaders, in recognition of their efforts in preserving Igbo cultural heritage.

‎The event successfully showcased the beauty of Igbo traditions and reinforced the importance of preserving the language, customs, and values of the Igbo people. The Department of Linguistics/Igbo distinguished itself as a strong advocate for the promotion of Igbo language and culture through its active participation and outstanding performances.

‎The programme concluded with a closing prayer led by the Reverend Sister, bringing the memorable cultural celebration to a successful end.

THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS/IGBO HELD IT'S 2026 SEND-OFF CEREMONY

Date: Tuesday, 21st July, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m.

The event commenced with an opening prayer led by Mrs. J.N. Ezeoba. This was followed by the ushering in of the lecturers.

After the arrival of the lecturers, the Head of Department (HOD), Dr. C.N. Maduka Okafor, delivered the opening remark, welcoming everyone to the occasion and appreciating those who attended.

The next item was the presentation and breaking of the kola nut, led by Kingsley Esiaka Nnadozie (a final-year student and departmental president), who performed the traditional rite and offered prayers for a successful event.

Following the kola nut ceremony, Mrs. J.N. Ezeoba, a lecturer in the department, delivered an inspiring speech. She emphasized the importance of the Holy Bible, encouraging the graduating students to always make the Bible their guide and compass in life. She urged them to remain steadfast in faith and uphold good moral values wherever they find themselves.

After her speech, Akụkọ Ụwa was presented by a 300-level student, Chioma. She spoke on how modernity has gradually eroded many aspects of Igbo tradition and culture while encouraging students to preserve their cultural heritage.

The programme continued with a cultural dance presentation by the 200-level students, followed by Gwam Gwam Gwam and Okwuntabire. The performances were highly entertaining and featured a friendly competition between the 100-level and 200-level students.

Next was the sit-dance game involving the 100-level and 200-level students, with the 200-level contestants emerging as the winners.

After the game, the Face of LISA contest began. It featured dancing, a question-and-answer session, and a best-dressed segment, after which Abonyi Esther, a 100-level student, was selected as the winner with an outstanding score of 120%, defeating the other contestants by about 20%.

This was followed by a speech competition involving students from the 100-level and 200-level. Participants delivered speeches in both Igbo and English, and at the end of the competition, the 100-level students emerged as the winners.

‎After the competition, refreshments were served to guests and participants.
‎
‎The programme then proceeded to the handover ceremony, where the outgoing LISA President, Kingsley Esiaka Nnadozie, officially handed over leadership to the newly elected LISA President, Charles Edeh.
‎
‎Following the handover, the 100-level students entertained the audience with another dance performance. Thereafter, gifts were presented to the lecturers in appreciation of their support and dedication. Gifts were also presented to the graduating students in honour of their successful completion of the programme.
‎
‎The event concluded with a closing remark, followed by the closing prayer led by Kingsley Esiaka Nnadozie, after which the programme came to a successful end.

THE DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS/IGBO WERE INVITED FOR A CULTURAL FESTIVAL IN SHANAHAN UNIVERSITY

The Department of Linguistics and Igbo was invited to a cultural festival event at Shanghai University, which they attended. During the event, several activities were performed, including masquerade displays, traditional dances, drama presentations, flute performances, and question-and-answer sessions conducted in the Igbo language.
The event was attended by the Igwes of various communities, their elders, and chiefs. The Vice-Chancellor of the university was also present. The Department of Linguistics and Igbo was given a place at the high table as special guests.
The programme was colorful and successful, showcasing the richness of Igbo culture and traditions. After the event concluded, we returned home, marking the end of a memorable experience.

The Department of Linguistics/Igbo through the DOS "Kelvin Onyeka John Paul" launched her maiden monthly sports day today, 29th of May 2026. The event marked a memorable and exciting moment in the history of the department, as students came together to participate in physical and recreational activities.
The sporting exercise began with an opening prayer led by the DOS after which students engaged in jogging and a street walk to the school field. At the field, participants took part in several activities such as racing, ball dodging, and other light exercises aimed at promoting fitness, unity, and social interaction among students.
Students from all levels — 100 level, 200 level, 300 level, and final year — participated actively in the event. One of the highlights of the activity was the participation of the Head of Department (HOD), which made the occasion even more exciting and encouraging for students.
After the sporting activities, students and staff members took group photographs before jogging back to the department. The event ended with a closing prayer led by Emmanuela, a 400-level student.
The sporting activity was lively, impactful, and enjoyable. It helped students relax, build stronger relationships, and promote healthy living within the department. Due to the success of the maiden edition, the department has decided that the sporting activity will now be held on the last Friday of every month.

‎*Igbariam:* The program commenced with an opening prayer delivered by Mrs. Joy Okeke Ezoba, after which the school anthem was rendered.
‎
‎Following the anthem, a lecture centered on ethics and integrity was delivered by the Head of the Public Enlightenment Unit of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Awka Office, Mr. Shaibu. In his presentation, he discussed some common crimes prevalent in society and highlighted possible ways to combat them.

‎The second speaker, Radio Sapientia International presenter, Oma Sweetheart, took the stage to discuss Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the theme, “AI Can Be Your Gateway to Future Innovation.” She discouraged excessive and unproductive scrolling on social media and instead encouraged students to embrace digital and media innovation.

‎In her presentation, she explained AI as software that learns from data in order to make decisions, emphasizing that AI itself is not human and cannot function independently without human input and supervision behind the scenes. She further listed several AI tools used for generating text, language, images, designs, audio, music, videos, and animations, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Suno, and Runway.
‎
‎She also explained the relationship between linguistics and AI, stressing that AI systems require prompts to generate meaningful content and that such prompts are provided through human language and explanations. She highlighted career opportunities available to linguists in the AI field, including NLP Engineer, AI Prompt Engineer, Computational Linguist, AI Context Strategist, and Localization and Translation AI Specialist. She further mentioned several platforms where AI skills can be acquired. Concluding with practical demonstrations, she greatly assisted the students in understanding the basic concepts and applications of Artificial Intelligence.

‎The third speaker, Freshmann Jay of Radio Sapientia International, spoke on love and relationships. In his presentation, he emphasized that relationships are not inherently bad, but individuals should understand the purpose and direction of any relationship before venturing into one. According to him, a relationship that is not leading toward marriage is merely an affair with benefits rather than a meaningful relationship.

‎He advised students to choose partners wisely and to build relationships with individuals who would support and contribute positively toward their goals rather than diminish them. Furthermore, he encouraged students not to rush into relationships and stressed the importance of maintaining Godly relationships. He concluded by advising students to be mindful of what they say, how they dress, and not to give anyone their whole heart until marriage.

‎In her closing remark, the Head of the Department of Linguistics/Igbo, Dr. Chisom Maduka thanked God for the successful program and appreciated everyone for the presence, the closing prayer and photographs were taken, bringing the program to a successful conclusion.

HOD OF LINGUISTIC/IGBO DEPARTMENT, CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES HER BIRTHDAY TODAY 1ST APRIL 2026

Today, the entire Department of Linguistics/Igbo joyfully celebrates the birthday of our esteemed Head of Department.

A woman of wisdom, excellence, and dedication, she has continued to lead the department with strength, grace, and an unrelenting passion for academic growth. Through her guidance and commitment, she has inspired both staff and students to strive for greater heights.

Her leadership has not only contributed immensely to the progress of the department, but has also created an atmosphere of encouragement, discipline, and unity among us all. She has remained a mother figure, mentor, and source of motivation to many students whose lives she has touched positively.

As she celebrates this special day, we pray that God blesses her with good health, long life, greater achievements, and many more years of joy and fulfilment.
