The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has
extended the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) and Direct Entry(DE) registration exercise from
Saturday, 15th May, to Saturday, 29th May 2021.
The Board also shifted the conduct of the 2021 Mock-UTME
scheduled to hold on Thursday, 20th May to Thursday, 3rd June 2021.
Consequent to the above, the 2021 UTME earlier scheduled to commence from 5th to 19th June is now to hold from 19th
June to 3rd July 2021.
These changes were announced after a two-day stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Board to identify the challenges
that had impeded the smooth flow of the registration process and proffer workable solutions to the identified bottlenecks in
the interest of the teeming population of candidates aspiring for further studies in institutions of higher learning. It would be recalled that the Board, in compliance with extant laws on the use of National Identification Number (NIN), announced last year that it was going to use NIN as one of the requirements for
the 2020 UTME Registration. This plan was, however, put on hold because of certain overriding considerations. However, this year the Board embraced the policy fully by making the possession of NIN a cardinal requirement of the registration process in compliance with
the directive from the Federal Government. In doing so, other
noticeable benefits accrued to the Board principally in terms of curbing double registration and impersonation, among others.
To holistically address all challenges encountered by candidates, the stakeholders undertook an on-the-spot assessment of the registration process at some Computer-Based Test (CBT)
centres, NIMC enrollment centres and Telco offices in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where they interacted with prospective candidates and CBT centre operators. After exhaustive deliberations, the meeting identified the following as the
major challenges that had slowed down the registration process:
i. Candidates’ non-compliance with registration requirements:
- Using the wrong format to generate profile codes while sending NIN to the Board’s USSD code (55019);
- Inputting incomplete or wrong NIN to generate profile codes;
- Using multiple cell phone numbers to generate profile codes with the same NIN;
- Using special packages such as post- paid, promo bundles, Do Not Disturb (DND) which blocks delivery of profile codes to candidates;
- Last-minute rush for NIN enrollment by prospective candidates.
ii. CBT centres’ violation of registration
procedures:
- Inadequate registration points at some CBT centres, such centres use only one or two points instead of the approved twenty(20);
- Warehousing of candidates by prior collection of registration fee thereby constraining the candidates from registering at other available centres;
- Extortionate charges above the approved registration fees;
- Deployment of incompatible computer systems;
- Using untrained and unauthorised personnel to register candidates.
iii. Telcos and JAMB Digital Service Providers’ poor service delivery:
- Connectivity failure;
- Non-reimbursement of candidates for undelivered codes;
- Malfunctioning of software;
- Inadequate capacity. To ensure that the extended period is
fully utilised, the Board would dispatch monitoring teams to all States of the Federation and the FCT during the extension period.
To resolve these identified bottlenecks, the meeting adopted the following measures:
i. The Board is to seek an alternative
Value-Added Service (VAS) provider to enhance the smooth dispatch of profile codes.

The Registrar of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has revealed that there is a possibility of shifting the date of the scheduled UTME examination further.
The UTME examination which is presently scheduled to hold between June 5 and June 19 might witness a shift as the Registrar explains that at least 600,000 candidates who have indicated interest to participate in the examination has been unable to complete their registration.
Speaking during a virtual meeting with 2021 UTME committee members on Friday, he revealed that 1.1 million candidates have so far registered for the 2021 UTME, and the board anticipated approximately 1.9 million registrations at the end of the exercise.
Professor Oloyede noted that although 50 percent of the candidates have registered successfully, there is a need to carry everyone along, including those that have not registered due to one or two difficulties.

He said: “This is because about 600,000 candidates who have indicated interest in the exam are yet to register. There is a need to give everyone the opportunity.
“The possibility of shifting the exam forward is still high, but that will be determined after our meeting with stakeholders,” he explained.
Speaking on some of the challenges faced by applicants, Professor Oloyede appealed to applicants on the inclusion of some regulations including the mandatory National Identification Number (NIN) requirement.
He said: “We apologise for putting you through some hardship in the registration. The government directed that anyone participating in JAMB must have their NIN. This is beyond our control. Those who are yet to register should do so.
“The MOCK exam is bill to come up on Thursday. It is an exam meant to test out capability. As you all know, the main exam is coming up on June 5 and 19, 2021,” he told the meeting.
The JAMB Boss however said that the issue of whether the exam will be postponed or not will be discussed at the meeting.
He said: “We are meeting with stakeholders today to discuss the issues and on whether we will shift the exam date forward or not. We will brief the media on the outcome of the meeting tomorrow.
“Shifting the exam date is not the solution; at the meeting, we will discuss how some of the problems encountered by candidates would be resolved. It is important that we carry everyone along.”

JAMB TO NOW HOLD 2021 MOCK-UTME ON THURSDAY, 20TH MAY, 2021

The 2021 Mock Examination earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, 30th April, 2021, has now been rescheduled to hold on Thursday , 20th May 2021.

This change of date is owing to some ongoing adjustments in the Board’s operational processes. The change, however, would not affect other schedules including the date for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination fixed for 5th to 19th June, 2021. Candidates who have registered and have chosen to sit the Mock and other critical stakeholders are to note this change of date.

Similarly, it is necessary to inform all stakeholders that the 2021 UTME/DE Registration exercise is ongoing and it is to end on 15th May, 2021. The Board has, however, noted with concern that some candidates in trying to generate their profiles are sending their details wrongly to 55019. The right process is to send the word "NIN" allow one space in between, then insert the eleven digits NIN number to 55019 e.g. NIN 00000000000. Any other process is wrong and would not generate the profile code for the candidate. It is also necessary for the candidate to know that only the SIM that is linked to his/her NIN can be used to send the NIN to 55019.
