DELIVER TO / DELIVER ON
1. The letter was delivered TO him.
2. The letter was delivered ON him.

One of the sentences above can make you lose a case. That little difference (to/on) can decide whether you win a case or lose it.

Saying "The letter was delivered to him" sounds normal. Doesn't it? Yes, it does. But, legally, that statement can be very weak.

In the statement, “The letter was delivered ON him", the preposition, "ON", is not ordinary grammar. It is LEGAL FIREPOWER.

What is the difference between the two sentences?
"Delivered TO him" could mean it was sent to him through someone. It could even mean he never actually saw it. "Deliver TO" is casual: it is everyday English.

"Delivered ON him" (or "served on him”), on the other hand, means the document was personally handed over to him. He received it directly. He cannot easily deny receiving it. This is what lawyers rely on.

Why does this matter? It matters because in law, “I didn’t see it” can be a defence but once something is delivered or served on you, that excuse starts to die.

For instance, a court notice is sent to you but you ignore it. If it is delivered or served on you but you ignore it, you may wake up to a judgment against you.

Every English word is not just English. Some words carry legal consequences. A preposition can decide whether you win or lose a case.
