In the Qur’an, Allah repeatedly reminds us of the honour, respect, and kindness we owe to our parents. Right after commanding us to worship Him alone, He says:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you show excellence to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not even say to them ‘uff,’ nor repel them, but speak to them noble words.” (Qur’an 17:23)
Today, we see many parents neglected—especially in their old age, sent away to nursing homes, treated with impatience, or spoken to harshly. This is not the way of Islam. Mistreating parents is a major sin, and serving them is one of the greatest acts of worship.
Their duʿā is powerful. A parent’s sincere prayer for their child can open doors of goodness, mercy, and protection that nothing else can. And their displeasure can close doors we are unaware of.
Remember, they raised you when you were young, cared for you, sacrificed for you, and protected you at a time when you couldn’t protect yourself. Now, when they need us most, we must honour them with patience, love, and gentleness.
May Allah make us among those who serve their parents with excellence, earn their duʿā, and gain His pleasure through them. Ameen.
