It is imperative to mention that countries like UK, Germany etc have held these vocational professions in high esteem.
One of the major problems we have in Nigeria is that we have overlooked or probably forgotten vocational and trade careers and that is why the country has not developed as expected over the years. In order to bridge the gap, that lack of skilled workers which have been created in our country, is what our academy have began a campaign for career and vocational education as a valuable alternative to
a more “traditional” four year degree. We have put in proper perspective a more organised educational programme to assist school leavers and working class who are interested in vocational and trade careers. Vocational careers, Trade jobs, skilled trades or whatever name is given will make up an important sector in our economy and inadvertently give a boost to our economy if it’s well coordinated. The vocational trainings come in many forms but each has its own training pattern. The following are just few examples out of the lots of our vocational trainings:
Technicians – Cooling and refrigeration technicians. They repair, service and install the system that control the temperature and air quality in homes and offices. They may work with other craft workers like sheet metal workers, duct installers and boiler makers. From our investigation,
we found out that most employers prefer suck skilled workers with post-secondary school certificate, diploma or associate degrees. Plumber, pipe fitters and steam fitters – All these professions install, maintain and repair the types that carry liquid and gases in and out of buildings. Master plumber may also work with construction professionals when developing blue prints. It is imperative that while these professions learn on the job through apprenticeship, it is equally important that they attend vocational school to enhance their qualification. With this level of attainment they will have formidable professions that will have to be licensed before practising. Welder – Welders, cutters, solderers weld or join metal parts with hand-held equipment. They involve this profession to attend a few weeks of technical school to several year of on-the-job training combined with technical or vocational school. Cosmetologist and Hairdressers – This professions provide beauty and hairstyling services respectively but not always in a salon setting. It is observed that most of these professions were self-employed and for them to take their businesses to greater height of improvement they are required to possess formal training through beauty and vocational school.
