This post is for a very specific person. Someone who finished secondary school more than a year ago. Someone who has been trying to gain university admission — through JAMB, through Post UTME, through waiting lists and supplementary admissions — and has not yet succeeded.

Someone who is beginning to wonder if university is still possible for them.

How to Stay Calm and Focused in the Days Before Your JAMB Examination

You have studied. You have done the past questions. You have attended tutorials. The examination is days away and now — for many students — a new and unexpected enemy appears.
Anxiety.

Exam anxiety is real, it is common and if left unmanaged it can significantly undermine performance on JAMB day regardless of how well prepared you are. Today we want to give you practical, proven strategies to stay calm and perform at your best when it matters most.

1. Stop Learning New Material 48 Hours Before the Exam
This is one of the most important things you can do and one of the hardest. The temptation to cram new topics in the final hours is almost universal — but it is counterproductive. New information introduced at this stage creates confusion rather than clarity. Trust the preparation you have already done.

Spend the last 48 hours reviewing things you already know well — not learning things you don't.

2. Sleep Is Not Optional
A well-rested brain performs significantly better than an exhausted one on examination day. This is not an opinion — it is neuroscience.

Staying up all night before JAMB is one of the most common and most damaging mistakes students make.
Aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep the night before your examination. Set two alarms if you need to — but sleep.

3. Eat a Proper Meal Before the Exam
Your brain needs fuel to perform. Do not go into a 2 hour examination on an empty stomach. Eat a proper, balanced meal on examination morning — not too heavy, not too light. Avoid sugary snacks that produce energy spikes followed by crashes.
4. Arrive at the CBT Centre Early
Arriving late to a JAMB CBT centre is a nightmare scenario that adds enormous stress to an already pressured situation. Know exactly where your centre is. Know how long it takes to get there. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time.

5. During the Exam — Answer What You Know First
Do not get stuck on difficult questions. Move through the paper answering everything you know confidently first — then return to the challenging ones with the time remaining. This strategy maximises your score and prevents time from running out on questions you could have answered.

6. Have a Backup Plan Ready
One final thing — and this applies regardless of how confident you feel. Before you walk into that CBT centre, know that IJMB exists and that regardless of your JAMB outcome your academic journey will continue moving forward.

That knowledge alone — knowing you have a guaranteed alternative — reduces exam anxiety significantly. You are not gambling everything on one moment.
