Breath control is probably the most common and important topic on voice training. Why?

Because you don’t want to be cut short by insufficient breath supply when you are close to finishing a phrase or hitting a high note.

Without breath control the air you inhale gushes out on the first note you sing, causing you to need more air to sing properly.

The insufficient air also prevents you from driving a sustained long phrase home and makes a would-be-strong melody weak.

Welcome to the first part of this music education series! We will explore Voice Texture, Tone, Tessitura, and Timbre. Understanding these fundamental aspects of music will enhance your singing prowess.

TESSITURA - the most acceptable/comfortable range for a singer to sing in and not sound strained or drowned. This is not the range but a lively part of the range also called the vocal "sweet spot". Tessitura is generally dependent on the choice of key

TEXTURE- the combination and the relationship of layers of sound from voices or instruments to form the feel we experience when listening to music. This is often mistaken for TIMBRE (Voice Quality) when people say I love her voice texture. Texture is based on harmony type or how heavy or light the instrumental is.

TIMBRE- pronounced (Tim- BRE) is a French word meaning the quality of a sound, it's unique tone colour, the characteristic features that differentiate a singer's voice from another. Tone colour is determined by the stature, shape, and size of the vocal organs.

TONE- vocal tone refers to the overall frequency balance. “Tone” refers to the balance of frequencies present in a sound; “bass” (deep sound) and “treble” (bright sound). A singer's vocal tone could be bright, dull, heavy, light, piercing, and so on. Tone is affected by stature, posture, and vocal placement.
