In my previous post, I wrote about one of the numerous rules of teaching children to read - The Magic'e'/ silent 'e'.

The second rule, using the silent 'e' is that, children have to be aware that ' No English word ends with a # or #.

The work or duty of the silent 'e' is to position itself at the end of such english word that sounds like it ends with either # or #.

Examples of such words are:
Brave
Grave
Have
Strive
Starve
Slave
Sue
Glue
Blue
Cue
Queue
Clue etc.

These words sound like they end with'l 'U' and 'V'. So, when children are asked to write them , they should be reminded that no English word ends with letters # and #.

For instance, a child is asked to write #, the child might write it as # but will quickly add the 'e' if he/she remembers the rule.

Hope this is helpful?

Dear All,

I'll like you to join me as we look through one of the ways to teach children to read certain words in Phonics.

Remember, one of the importance of teaching children, using the Jolly Phonics is that, it helps them develop high level of self-esteem and confidence. This goes with them into the future and makes them great leaders in the society.

We shall be looking at ...

The Magic 'e', / sillent 'e'

It is called 'magic' because it's appearance or usage changes the entire word it's added to. It is 'silent' because, it doesn't make a noise about itself. It only acts without talking.

It's uses.....

The first rule is that, silent 'e' changes the proceeding vowel into a long sound and makes it say it's name and not it's sound.

Examples are:

SIN -. SINE
MAT -. MATE
FAT. -. FATE
WIN -. WINE
MAN -. MANE e.t.c

Let's check the first example out.

The vowel (I) in SIN says it's sound /I/ while the introduction of ' e' to the word SIN to give SINE, makes that same ( I ) to say it's name. /ai/ i.e the way you pronounce it while reciting the letters of the alphabet.

Hope this is helpful?

Equipping the child with the knowledge of Phonics is like teaching the child to fish, rather than giving him fish .

Our online reading class is still on-going.

Hi everyone .
How is the lockdown treating you? Let's not loose hope because, it is but for a short period of time.

This too shall pass. Definitely!

It's a period of reflection.....

A period to think of the way forward.....

A period to re- map and plan for the post-covid era.....

Stay positive.

Stay safe.
