This is PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR popularly called IFO in Yoruba.
IT IS NOT ECZEMA
It is caused by a Fungi called MALASSEZIA FURFUR which lives normally on the skin & doesn't cause infection .
When situation that affect skin humidity or warmth happens it causes this disease. This Fungi M. furfur produces a chemical called Azelaic Acid, which has some sort of whitening effect on skin
It does this by blocking an enzyme (TYROSINASE) which is involved in production of Melanin
(Remember Melanin gives Skin it's dark colour)
This causes the lightening.
Myths about PITYRIASIS VERSICOLOR
-it means the person is dirty or not bathing well
-you can get it by hugging someone
-it is transmitted by sharing clothes or underwear (you should not share any of those by the way )
-it is spread by S*x
All untrue.
