A bill for the establishment of a Kidney Research & Treatment Center at Hadejia was debated on the floor and scaled through 2nd reading with resounding endorsement with the Senate Chair of the Health Comittee Dr Yahaya Oloriegbe not only supporting it but giving his commitment to its final passage within the life of the 9th Assembly.
Chronic Kidney Disease has been ravaging the Hadejia/Nguru axis for some time now and at least 3 separate research investigations including by NAFDAC and NARICT have confirmed a 3 to 500% incident differential with the national average which itself is higher than the global prevalence rate.
Preliminary results have narrowed down the cause to nephrotoxic elements like lead, cadmium, glyphosate and other Agrochemicals, especially herbicides, that are finding their way into the water supply from expanded rice cultivation, resulting in a CKD epidemic in the community that is killing hundreds daily.
Locating a Nephrology research, training and treatment center in the epicenter of CKD prevalence will not only bring much needed focus to the problem, but also serve as a training hub for nephrologists and Dialysis nurses that are currently in extremely short supply.
Meanwhile the Comittee on Judiciary Human Rights & Legal matters held a marathon public hearing for 7 bills, a condensed but necessary schedule to clear the backlog of legislation refereed to it from the floor.
